Joanne's Animal Kingdom
I can't beleive I am posting this but I need to share this with people who understand.

Two weeks ago we had a small grease fire in the oven - didn't seem like a big deal- I turned on the exhaust fan and opened some windows. I also turned on all of the ceiling fans to help clear out the smell and the little bit of smoke.

I thought all was well until about 2 hours later - my Mongo (U2) started acting funny and in the seconds it took for me to get to him he died in my arms. Minutes later I realized the lovebirds weren't doing well either. I tried getting them out to fresh air but they also died in my hands on my deck.

So I lost 4 birds in a 10 minute time span. I packed up the rest of the birds and left the house for a few hours and they are all fine.

the vet said it was probably the fumes from the coating the put on self cleaning ovens.

I have never run my self cleaning oven because of the fumes and now have been told that you should run it once with all of the birds out of the house due to a coating they put on it before shipping. Even if you never plan on running it again. If I had done this I may have been able to prevent this tragedy.

I am so sorry for you and your family. How tragic and heartbreaking.
You could have never known that would happen. These little feathered friends of ours, even though that can act tough, are so fragile when it comes to certain things that we never even think are harmful.
You have my deepest sympathy and all my hugs.

wow...I am sorry for what happen but this is also a learning tool for me...as I was wanting to clean my oven next week.....so if I do a self cleaning on my oven I will need to evacuate my birds for the time being?

OMG! I'm so sorry to hear about this. It happens so fast..! Oh, I so feel for you! (((((((((big hugs)))))))))))

I remember a while back I left my dishcloth on a burner that I thought I had turned off. I noticed a smell..and it melting. I quickly moved birds to bedroom..farthest point away and opened up all the windows. The cloth was nylon..or polyestor...and it sure smelled. It really scared me..thought it would harm the birds..and I see thing like that can...glad I have old stove. If I get a new one day (I rent) I'll keep the above in mind.

I wont' even get new carpet for my apt. I have orange shag! If I have new stuff put it the fumes might be toxic for my birds. (and me).

Joanne's Animal Kingdom
thank you everyone for your kind thoughts and words - they do help

I do want to clarify that I knew of the dangers of self cleaning ovens which is why I have never run mine. I did not know that it is actually recommended that you run it once to remove the excess coating - with all of the birds out of the house.

If I had done that this tragedy might not have happened. this was such a stupid thing. There was some butter spilled on the bottom of the oven from chicken kiev the night before and then I put a berry pie in to bake and when the juices spilled over they caused the butter to flare up and catch fire. It was so miner it didn't even damage the oven. It was just hot enough to burn some of that coating and release the toxins.

I have contacted Maytag the mfg of my oven and asked why none of this is included in the owners manual and was basically told that they have a general caution statement but can't print everything. They also told me the installer is supposed to tell you to run the self clean feature first - which I did find in the instructions to the installer mixed in with the checking for a gas leak. I did however receive a sympathy card from them - that was actually hand written, probably by the customer service rep that I talked to as she was very upset when I told her what happened.

I still can't believe this has actually happened and it is so quiet at home I can hardly stand to be here. I also haven't been able to work on jewelry since then because Mongo was my helper.
Andie's Mom
Awww Joanne, Sending you big hugs gal.

As one who has also lost some beloved birds from tragic accidents I can totally understand where your heart and mind is right now.

I know that nothing we say or do will totally take the hurt away, but maybe knowing that sharing this information with others may have save the lives of others pets it will help to ease your pain.

Big Big Hugs.

For those of you who have self cleaning ovens and if you haven't ever used the self cleaning feature, When you do use it please make sure that your birds and other animals are out of the house, and it is wise if you and your family leave as well, If you have exhaust fans I would also have them running while using the feature and give the house at least an hour to air out before bringing your birds back into the house just to make sure all the toxins have disipated...
