My hubby and I are "bird chauffers" 3 days a week...we pick up wild birds that have been found and brought into the vet by our house, and take them out to a place called Roger's Wildlife Center (http://www.rogerswildlife.org/ ) where they rehab them and eventually set them free again. Today we had 2 baby pigeons, which we couldn't get a good pic of, but at least once a week we wander around on the MANY acres and check out the birds and other critters. Today we had several very curious turkeys follow us ALL over that place gobbling at us! Think they were trying to tell us something? We also saw a clutch of 1 week old baby barn owls, and 2 6 week old fluffy white owls that were the cutest things I've ever seen. Didn't get their pics because they were inside and I didn't have my phone with me in there, but got the turkeys (and me..the biggest turkey) and some of the owls that were outside. Enjoy.

Cheeky's Mom....we live in crowded 'ole Dallas, but this place (the wildlife rehab) is about 10 minutes south of downtown, in a rural town called Hutchins. Berlie, my hubby is from England, and last year his green card renewal got lost in the mail, and he had to reapply, and it's now been a year since he was able to work a 'real job', so he (not being a house hubby sort) decided to check on some places where he could volunteer. The Roger's Center was something he became quite interested in, and offered to help there. He found it just by doing an internet search of places with animals to volunteer in Dallas. He goes out there several times a week and does basically whatever they need him to do including cleaning cages, helping teach owls and hawks to hunt mice, handfeeding baby birds of all sorts (they even had a clutch of quakers they were feeding when we first starting going out there) as well as doing the bird chauffering. I don't go as often as he does since I take care of my elderly mother during the day, but I go as often as I can, and always on weekends. I just love it there...they mostly do rehabilitation of birds, but they also take in other wildlife if there is the need. I've bottle fed squirrels, llamas, and believe it or not, a beaver too! LOL! They also rescue parrots if necessary, and currently have 2 CAGs and a blue and gold maccaw. The "office" is a trailor, with caged birds, but also birds flying around...herrons standing on file cabinets, baby owls on towels on counters...it's so funny...they are EVERYWHERE!! Lots of the ones they rehab and set free choose to remain on the land there, and are quite friendly. Yesterday I was hand feeding a vulture...HAHA (and hoping he didn't decide to eat my hand). ohmy.gif

Oh, the turkeys are beautiful! And now I'm going to feel very guilty about Thanksgiving. I haven't seen a live turkey since my uncle's Tom Turkey used to chase me around when I was a kid. He was MEAN! laugh.gif The hens were nice and let me pet them but Tom was a bully.

We have a wildlife rehab here, too, but they specialize in raptors. They have some beautiful birds, including a snowy owl. The ones who are too injured to return to the wild become part of their education program.

Is that you in the pic, Lisa? Always nice to see a face go with the name.

I feel guilty too but probably not guilty enough to turn down that big drumstick with some cornbread dressing and gravy. laugh.gif

They are beautiful though!

I've always been fascinated with owls too.
