Cheeky's Mom....we live in crowded 'ole Dallas, but this place (the wildlife rehab) is about 10 minutes south of downtown, in a rural town called Hutchins. Berlie, my hubby is from England, and last year his green card renewal got lost in the mail, and he had to reapply, and it's now been a year since he was able to work a 'real job', so he (not being a house hubby sort) decided to check on some places where he could volunteer. The Roger's Center was something he became quite interested in, and offered to help there. He found it just by doing an internet search of places with animals to volunteer in Dallas. He goes out there several times a week and does basically whatever they need him to do including cleaning cages, helping teach owls and hawks to hunt mice, handfeeding baby birds of all sorts (they even had a clutch of quakers they were feeding when we first starting going out there) as well as doing the bird chauffering. I don't go as often as he does since I take care of my elderly mother during the day, but I go as often as I can, and always on weekends. I just love it there...they mostly do rehabilitation of birds, but they also take in other wildlife if there is the need. I've bottle fed squirrels, llamas, and believe it or not, a beaver too! LOL! They also rescue parrots if necessary, and currently have 2 CAGs and a blue and gold maccaw. The "office" is a trailor, with caged birds, but also birds flying around...herrons standing on file cabinets, baby owls on towels on counters...it's so funny...they are EVERYWHERE!! Lots of the ones they rehab and set free choose to remain on the land there, and are quite friendly. Yesterday I was hand feeding a vulture...HAHA (and hoping he didn't decide to eat my hand).
