Getting a new cage should be a fun thing, right? I am shopping for a macaw cage. This is to house a single scarlet macaw who is a petite scarlet. She will be spending the majority of her time out of the cage, generally only there at night or if I am not home.

I found this cage, which I really like and found a great price on it through someone here on the QP Forum. (This is not the great price but still good and the same cage) Free shipping

Then, someone pointed me to this cage.....I am thinking a dome top may be better anyway and this is a larger for not a significant more. Shipping $18

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod...mp;pcatid=14410

After I think I could decide between those two after taping out the area, I get yet another link to a DOUBLE macaw cage for nearly the same price as the second cage. Shipping $25

Double Macaw Cage

Now.....I don't know which one I like better. I guess I should let my husband decide.

I can definitely get the double macaw cage, but as far as the dome cage. I can't find that exact model. I'll look through the choices. I know there is one victorian style one that is a bit fancier, but I don't think you need to be overwhelmed quite yet!

I think the play top would be handy unless you have or intend to have another play stand for when your guy is out of the cage...Usually its good that they can climb up play on top and then climb in if they want...Then again the dome top looks great ..
Not sure about the double one unless you plan on a second bird might just be a waste more cleaning harder to move about etc etc , is it seperated in the middle or all combined ..???
I think probably the Dome with a nice big playstand that you can move from room to room .....
Good luck decideing.. smile.gif

My Scarlet is in the second cage and I HATE it. It is 46x36 with 1 1/4 inch spacing but the bars are quite thin and my macaws are taking it apart. I dont know if you are following my other post about cages, but I am in the same boat here, desperate to find a good new cage. Either the first or third link are cages with at least a little quality to them.

Oh, let me know about the double macaw. I would love to be able to support you am0z and get a cage from you. Like I said too, I don't need it until January.

I sent hubby links to all 3, he said to go with the double macaw.

Xanthus, the only thing I didn't like about that cage was the bar spacing. Good to know someone has some personal experience with it.

Maji, the double has a removable divider which I would not be using. Savannah will have a play stand or two in the house. I was initially considering the playtop but after looking at one in person, I think it could be hard to get her down and it also gives her easier access to the ceiling if she decides she wants to eat it. huh.gif I also like that I could hang some bigger toys from the dome without cutting into her space as much.

I guess I need to play the lottery so I can get her a SS cage.

I thought I had saved the link you gave me in chat but didn't. Can you post it here or send it in a PM? Thanks!

If I won the lottery, I could get one of the red cages, an outdoor aviary AND a SS cage wink.gif

Check out the above cage-if the bird is going to be out of the cage most the time. You can easily remove the center and make it a single cage. I had this cage and it is very large and roomy. I would have been able to put 6 greys in one. 3 top 3 bottom.

I like the wider side by side double cage rather than the taller double cage that you have posted Cheryl...
If you have plenty of room then go for it... smile.gif

Thanks for the link but I need at least 40" w and 30" deep for Savannah. Even though she will spend the majority of her day outside her cage, I don't want her to feel cramped.

I have an entire living room that is empty so space is not really an issue for the cage.

Frankly, I think most cages are too tall, where then are not wide enough. Most macaw cages would be find starting at knee hight and ending and eye height. But that is me, I have yet to see it though. Go with either of those cages, though I prefer HQ cages to A&E cages, as the quality is just a little higher but at the same price point generally. JMHO

Here is my Scarlet in her cage

Beautiful scarlet and nice cage. I looked at HQ but the double is almost $800 . I have not searched a lot though. I have to run off to a Girl Scout meeting but I will post a couple of pictures of Savannah taken this week. She is 12 weeks old now.

Ok since I'm paranoid that someone will try to buy one of the cages before i have them in stock I keep the products down, but I've put up a few to look at, and all of them should be available in the same coloring. I"ve also trumped up the prices so that if someone does try to buy one I can afford to go to petco and send it to them lol!Have a look at the ones I have up in the cages section. Also I included the dometop version of the flat top you were looking at. I believe the domed version is the second from the top. Remeber the prices are not real, and I'm not charging 5 grand for a cage lol! click here

Raven~ HQ cages do cost a bit more but they are better quality to stand up to those macaw beaks smile.gif I really like the double cage but the curved top makes for harder cleaning
Amoz~ The 2nd cage you have listed is the one my female macaw is in and I HATE it!They take it apart every time I turn around and the cage bars just are not that strong..my greenwings can actually bend the bars when they chew them.
We had the victorian style...for about 4 weeks..maybe better for a mid sized bird..and pain for the bigger guys too hard to clean and they kept flipping down the top door and getting out.
The ones that open on top..never have nor ever will use because of the dangers od them opening them and getting caught
The square cage is the one my male is in and Its been better then the rest so far.He did break the door lock and the feed door locks(within the first week), but hubby welded on different locks for me smile.gif I can't use the play top because he is too close the the ceiling and molding but they each have a playstand so the QP uses that playtop alot lol just not when Sebastion is IN the cage wink.gif

Just thought I would add my 2 cents tongue.gif

Yeah I totally agree about the top opening cages. I won't ever have one, but I know some people who live the them. Some macaws are bound and determined to destroy their cages, and there's not much that can be done about it. I can confidently say that there really isn't a grand different between hq and A&E cages. They're made out of the same materials, and in fact the barspacing on most A&E cages is closer together then HQ. I personally have seen macaws tear through just about every cage possible, and am not biased towards any brand, and will definitely be offering HQ cages, but for right now HQ isn't in my grasp. It is important to note all complaints against a cage, but make certain that it is the right cage that you criticize since many many many cages look exactly the same.

Ravenclaw-I can only advise on which one looks like more fun. I would go with the double macaw cage. That one is awesome looking. I wanted a macaw. I had the experience of visiting the zoo though....they have a wide variety of macaws. I wanted a hyacinth. And then I got up close and was so scared of them. HOLY MOLY they are BIG. The size of their beak alone freaked me out. I like to dream though that I could handle one...........and that I have lots of money too.

I work at an avian specific pet shop, and have experience with many different cages. I have personally put together 20 or so A&E cages and a similar number of HQ cages. Here is my opinion. From a pure packing view point I prefer HQ as there is FAR less damage that occurs with the way they pack the cages together. Plus, to me HQ has a nicer powder coating. A&E just seems a little dull looking where HQ is nearly a gloss. The higher the gloss, the less porous the surface, the easier to clean. I don't like the locks on either brand, but A&E cages is much easier for a macaw to manipulate from inside the cage and let themselves out. Just a few thoughts for you all.

When it comes to cages, you do NOT want to shop by price, shop by quality. Between these two brand they are close enough there only slight differences in quality so as to make little difference. But if you by a cheap cage as many do, you will be replacing soon any way. You might as well spend the extra money now. The Prevue cage (the one mine is in) was first my CAG's cage, but I actually downsized her cage and got her a 36" Cal Cage, so I decided to use it as a temp cage for my scarlet macaw, and have spent the last year looking for something new for her, with no real luck.
