Thanks all! I am totally smitten with her.
I am sure it was no surprise when we finally got her since I had been visiting her for 3 weeks, playing with her.
The kids are around various macaws (military, B&G, greenwing) as well as a Cockatoo and Eclectus. They are respectful of the beak. None of the birds where we are getting Savannah, for the most part, are nippy (2 of the macaws are but they are not generally down where the kids can handle them) Those that are, we just don't handle them. Obviously, safety for Savannah AND the kids are always in mind.
It is kinda funny, the cockatoo is the sweetest bird around, allows anyone to handle her and will lean down to let the 3 yr old pet her. Yet my 11 yr old is a bit hesitant to handle her. But...she has no problem putting Savannah on her back, handling her beak and wings and playing with her toes and right now, Savannah has a higher likelihood of nipping just due to her age.
For all that Savannah has a big beak, she has never actually bit down unless a certain 14 year old was silly enough to put his finger into her beak and she thought it was a syringe. I have been bitten worse by our budgie! That little booger broke skin.

Hubby would really like a macaw someday and the beak is what makes me hesitant.

YOWCH. But Savannah looks like she's very sweet or your little one wouldn't be so fond of her. Have you taken her home yet?

Savanah is a BEAUTY!!! Oh how I'd love to have a big birdy like that. Alas, my hubby is terrifed of those huge beaks, but one day.... I think it's funny that I've handled hundreds of big parrots, and like you said Denise, the only times I've been bitten badly enough to draw blood was from my budgies I owned when I was a child. They could be vicious little buggers, tho I adored them. When does Savanah get to come home?

She is only 12 weeks old so we have a loooooong time still. It will be towards the end of January before she comes home. This works well because she won't be brand new right as all the bustle of the hoidays are in full swing. This also gives me plenty of time to get her cage, start collecting toys and making sure we have a macaw proof area as much as possible. Originally, I had planned to put her in our front hall and then I looked at the wood banister that would be next to her cage. Whoops! Now, she will be in the front room near the front windows so she can look out easily while I may be out running errands.

I wanted a Hyacinth really bad. I saw one on TV and fell in love. Then I went to a local zoo that has a bunch of Macaws......needless to say I changed my mind real fast when the trainer said they can "easily" break a broom handle in half. YIKES!!!!!!!!! I do still like them though and if I were absolutely guaranteed I wouldn't be bitten I would get one........I guess a girl can dream right.

I think that is how I feel. I believe if you got one just weaned though then you would feel more comfortable and trusting with it. In most cases when treated well then they prob wont bite you that hard. And you would be more comfortable around one you trusted.I may have to stick to a Hahns.LOL .Plus the big guys go thru a lot more food and toys. Take a lot of space and time. But REALLY gorgeous.

All birds have a beak so all birds will bite at some point. Macaws can buzz through 2x4's like nobody's business. I think if you are confident and comfortable, they respond to that. Zazu, the little QP, can chase my 7 year old right off the couch. He rushes him, wings out and beak open. The 7 yr old beats feet. I just laugh at Zazu and pick him up. Since I have handled Savannah since she was still a naked little thing, I am very comfortable and confident in what she is likely to do.
Hyacinths...they do have a massive beak!

I picked up some parrot books from the library today. I was reading up on the Hyacinths and this really summed everything up for me.......they are about the length of a baseball bat. Holy Cr@P. That is freakin HUGE.

Savannah is very beautiful
