Hey everyone biggrin.gif

Im so happy today my rescue mustached parakeet a.k.a marshall ( eventho its a she ) been out today and no mad flying at all shes been sat on the couch on top of a pillow making strange calling sounds to me, still doesnt want to be touched but is getting alot better with the biting.
She did step up a few times and didnt fly off either i was so happy.
Found out she only bites cuz shes scared of me but the biting is not hard at all she just looks so scary when she comes at me.

Its gonna take alot of time before shell get used to me properly but im not working at the moment ( work for an agency and theres no work right now) which is awsome gives me all the time in the world with her.
Been sat talking to her for hours today and a new word is brewing i think shes trying to say whaca doing but im not sure yet.

Id still love to get her wings clipped due to my son coming in and out all the time and id hate to see her fly out, but the vets around here still wont take her in unless she has anastetic which is a bit like ohmy.gif no ty!!
They told me only way would be if i held her and i dont wanna be inthere incase she thinks im trying to harm her and traumatize her even futher.
Ill just have to wait a bit longer till she gets a bit more settled here.

Thanks to everyone whos been so kind and posted on my last thread with extremly usefull advice im so glad i didnt listen to hubby and took her back and that i came here instead.

Just wanted to share that 8)

Awww, that's great, I'm glad she's coming around! biggrin.gif Patience is definitely key!

That's really odd that the vet won't clip her wings unless she is given an anaesthetic. blink.gif It's like a two second procedure and if they do it right they shouldn't have to worry about getting bitten etc. huh.gif I don't think she would be too tramautized if you held her, she might be a little ticked off for a couple of days but she'd get over it eventually. smile.gif ... but then again considering they won't clip without an anaesthetic makes me wonder if they even know how to clip them properly? unsure.gif

*Hugs* Thanks for the update!

Glad to hear great progress is being made. Good Job!

8) yea i find it strange too, been trying to find a "bird only vet" but the closest one there is, is about 30 mins in a car and when i picked her up she sure as hell didnt like the car ohhh lordyy.

Trouble is i got no clue of what so ever how to clip wings, my blue amazon never had his cut.
Also im still on the step up stage she wont let me touch her still so i couldnt hold her long enough to do it.
Shall i just take her there anyway ? her claws are really long too and could well do with a lil trim.

Vicky, she will def need clipping for her own safety and will be a calmer bird (that is as long as one believes in clipping...I DO!), but I wouldn't put her through anything that might lessen whatever trust she is gaining for you at this time. I'd just make sure she is not out of the cage when people are running in and out of the house. Let her out only when you know you will be alone with her for a while. It would be awful to see her fly out the door
Win her complete trust before you scare her again. Give her lots of time to learn to love you. She has been torn away from all she was used to and put in new surroundings that she knows nothing about. Think of her as a 3 year old child. That would scare them for sure.
She'll come around soon and be your buddy! Best wishes. wub.gif

yea that would be lovely id so love a tiny cuddle or a tiny touch of her so soft looking chest.

Shes been playing with her toys today for the first time since i got her it was so nice to see she really went for it aswell.
Shes been out today and no mad flying either i left her on the cage and went to sit down on the couch to see what she was gonna do.
Kept calling her name and making little taps on the couch as if to say come here, and she actually did altho it took about 20 mins for her to find a good spot to set off from it was so sweet how she came down right next to me.

I tried to reach out for her slowly but she ran a mile instead which is ok, must be horrible what she has gone though.
Im sure shell find out eventually that im no threat to her.

And yes i totally agree with you on the wing clipping it must be done, theres too many things she could fly up on and i got no chance of getting her down again.
The front door is the biggest threat i got no idea when my son is gonna come in when hes outside playing, so he texts me now to say ill be home at whatever time.
Problem is also that when shes out shell go in when she feels like it i cant make her go back i wish i could for her own safety but its not so yet 8)

Thanks for advice, keep them coming im always one for more info

Again, honestly I think this is having to do with the fact that you are in England. I know that my hubby who is British thinks wing clipping is horrible, and when I visited with him several times, I was told at all the pet shops that they did not believe in wing clipping and I was not allowed to handle any of their birds because they were not clipped. I'm just guessing here, but it's an educated guess...lol! Have you checked with pet shops near you to see if they do clipping? I've had my qp clipped at the pet shop many times, it's actually cheaper than taking him to the vet. They do toenails as well. I do recall reading somewhere that the British feel it's barbaric to clip pet parrots wings, but for the life of me I can't recall where. All I can find is this from "Wikopedia" on the subject: "Others feel that for birds that can climb well, wing clipping is a necessary safety practice for birds in many situations. The practice seems more prevalent in American bird care books (Athan 1999;[6] [7] than in similar British publications". Not much help I know, just thinking that may be why you are having so much trouble finding someone to clip your babies wings.

hey hey 8)

Yup they are all square headed here about it, did some more research today and 4 vets actually turned me down unless i was prepared to use anastetic or handle her my self.
Hubby thinks its horrible too, and i must say i used to think that way aswell but i cant see why not in this situation.
My son is in and out all the time, friends coming over and i havent got any other pets so theres no thread other then the front door really, which ofcase is the worst.
Overhere the livingroom got a frontdoor all houses overhere are the same and its so stupid i hate it being like this but i cant move my door.
I tried reading about it how to do it my self but i must say i wouldnt like to try especially not right right now as i cant hold her long enough or even touch her so itll have to wait till she settels better.

I rung 4 different pet stores and avery places today aswell to try and find out if they did wing clipping or nail cutting, but overhere its a health and safety all that polava ..
They arent allowed to do it incase something happens to the bird while doing it, i dont understand what the big deal is about.

Hi Vicky.
Do you have any "bird clubs", "breeders groups" or maybe even "rescue shelters" you could contact.
Do a GOOGLE search.
I just found these links

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_local,_county_and_regional_bird_clubs_and_ornithological_societies_of_the_United_Kingdom

www.birdsofbritain.co.uk/bird-clubs/o-s.asp

I dont know what part of England you are in.
I hope this helps.
keep up the good work with your new baby.
Be patient, lots of treats, try holding a treat ans see if she will come to eat it from your hand.
Good luck.

hey hun thanks for the links, however they are linked directly to wild life in the uk.
Theres no parrot or bird places here that will clip the wings due to healf and safety incase the bird freak out and die.
Believe me i been phoning the world the past few days.
So im giving up for now, ill deffo try again when she gets used to me and i can handle her a bit more.

She will gladly take treats from my hand now, and shes been doing some touching/ step up, however she will still run a mile if she gets unsure or scared.
Much better on the bites tho, she prefer to turn around as if to say i wont nothing to do with you, which im totally ok with rather that then them visious bites ey.

8) thanks for trying on the pages tho

Never heard of needing a sedative for a wing clip either. Is that vet afraid of birds? I will at all costs avoid ever sedating my birds unless they need it for a procedure.

Yeah our rescued Sun Conure is finally stepping up after 3 mos. She was badly abused. Sometimes all it takes is time...
