huh.gif I'm worried that my baby "kookie" has dry skin because when
he's preening I see little tiny white flakes. Do they get dandruff?
I live in Houston and I am told we have "hard water" here. Could this
be causing it. Does the temperature of his bath water have anything to
do with this. I found at the pet store something called Bath Time to
spray on him after his bath, but it does not seem to be helping. Any
help would be appreciated.

NO the white flakes are most likely the shafts (pin Feathers) around new feathers they break them open to let the new feathers open they are white spiky things you will notice when your bird is moulting these pin feathers are very annoying usually in a flock they have other birds that will help them break open the ones they can`t reach, a daily mist with water or bathes usually help soften them and you can help (if your fid will allow you) by gentley cracking open the shaft with your thumb and forefinger, these can make a fid crabby and uncomfortable too so your bird may act fussy during a heavy moult...

Yep, it just sounds like the sheath of the pins falling off... it looks a lot like dandruff! biggrin.gif Each feather is covered in a coating the cracks off easily once they are ready. The white coloured ones are ready to be preened and the dark coloured ones aren't as there is still in blood in them... so usually they tell you off if you come close to one that's not ready yet! lol I just searched preening videos on You Tube for you and I can across Jen and Tuckers video! I hope she doesn't mind if I post it for you! Like Majj said they are able to preen themselves but they can't reach their head so they ususally LOVE it if their mate (ie you!) preens their head for them as it's itchy and uncomfortable! Just gentley squeeze the pins that are ready and it flake off. smile.gif http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y73rfZzfgv4

I wouldn't recommend using any "bath" products, good 'ole water works the best IMO. wink.gif

Welcome to the forum! smile.gif

Dear Majj - Thank you so much for your help. He is molting and does
have lots of pin feathers in the back of his neck. I don't know if
I'm brave enough to pinch them, but in the evenings between 6 - 7 p.m.
while I watch my favorite soap, he sits on my chest and lets me massage
the back of his neck. He just squats, fluffs up, and puts his little
head down so I can rub. He loves it - he says "Coochi Coochi" while
I rub - spoiled rotten! Thanks again

It is possible though for birds to have dry skin. My eclectus gets dry around his neck in the summer when the AC is on. I mix some aloe vera juice in water and mist on him. Especially good around the neck to try and help put more moisture there. I took him to the vet the first time I noticed him scratching around his neck one year. His feathers were actually thinning from scratching. Not to the point that a stranger would notice. It was more noticeable when he was wet. The vet said it was dry skin. And it would be a little flakey.

yes some birds do get dry skin, especially if you live in a low humidity area. You may want to put a humidifier in your eclectus' room. I know of other eclectus' that have dry skin and are sprayed with aloe too.

The flakes however are most definitely the sheaths from pin feathers breaking up. Using an air purifier will help deduce the dust if it bothers you?? It will be good for your bird too.
