My missy has been just a little angel to me the past few months. Tonight I went up to feed her, and she lunged at me, several times. I don't know what in the world is wrong with her?!! Nothing has happened to upset her so I don't understand this. I started her on Avi-calm and feather-ific last week but that's supposed to calm them down and it definitely hasn't worked. I don't know what to do about it. Does anyone have any solutions? I covered her cage after this behavior and put her to bed. I'm at wits end here. Someone please help!!!!!
I should add that she's a severe feather plucker. She doesn't have tail feathers because just as fast as they start to grow, she plucks them. What in the world!! ohmy.gif

yano, i don't have a lot of advice for you, but i can totally relate. i was putting louie's breakfast in his cage a few days ago, and he got me good on my forearm, right on the fleshy part. i have a little scab there now. apparently he didn't want my arm in there. all i can say is let her get some sleep and maybe tomorrow she will be in a better mood.

good luck. i know it's hard when our lovies are crabby and we don't know why.

My Quaker Pickles is a plucker too. Doesn't sound a severe as your bird, but I started him on red palm oil from Harrisons, let his flight feathers grow back in, got a better humidifier, and let him and my other Quaker spend more time together and he has stopped plucking. Before I rehomed him he lived in the same cage with another Quaker. They got separated, Pickles broke his leg, and he became very wild. He's a great talker and sometimes will let me touch him but he was almost bald on his chest and was working on the back of his neck and his legs. The red palm and humidifier have soothed his skin and I think he misses being with another Quaker so I let Buttons hang out with him and he seems much happier. I know our situations are different but have you tried red palm oil for your little green chicken? Pickles is pretty wild too. I think they go through phases as they mature and if we can be patient and consistent, eventually it pays off. Buttons, my first Quaker was a rescue who had been abused and it took me a year to tame her down enough to keep my skin on when she was around me. I still have scars... huh.gif
For the demon possession, I think Quakers just go through that but I recommend red palm oil to anyone who has a plucker. My vet recommended it by the way so I have an avian vet's thumb up on that one too. smile.gif Maybe see what your vet thinks about the plucking? Has your bird seen a vet for that yet?

Thank you for your advice. Where do you get this red palm oil and how do you use it? I'm willing to try anything at this point. She's normally so nice to me, but not so nice to everyone else. She really surprised me lastnight!! Thanks again!!

Red Palm oil is in the "sunshine factor" by Harrisons. You can get it through their website.

You put a little bit on your bird's food...
I have also seen in on amazon. Sometimes you can find it in south american shops. It is called dende oil.

Sometimes, very rarely, Phoenix will give me a few aggressive lunges with his beak open for no apparent reason. It almost seems like a dominance thing though. When he does this I usually cup the top of his head in my palm with my fingers going down his back, hold his head down gently, look at him and say "Be nice", let go and it's kisses and completely friendly again.

I think you're going to the extreme on this/ If this has only happened to you once. Don't treat it as though it's the be all to end all. It's just an occasional thing. Quakers are cage territorial, and very bold birds. They will fight just about anything or anyone if they can justify doing so. So just make note of it, and treat it as it is.

Good advice from Renee....Heck, Mr. Harley is 5 years old and from day one he would always nip at my hand when I would put something in his food bowl...I never have figured this one out....maybe he thought I was going to take some food away from him...I dunno...I'm still learning about quakers....

But do try that palm oil and hopefully it will work.....Sounds like Renee has good results.... smile.gif and by the way, the Harrisons' food/etc is a No. 1 product in my book....Harley eats the Lifetime Fine....

I'm with AmOz on this one. Clyde nibbles on me just about every day for one reason or another and it's really not a big deal. If I'm petting him and touch him somewhere he doesn't want me to, he nips. If one of the dogs makes a movement he doesn't expect, he nips. If he's just thinking he hasn't nipped anybody for a while, he nips. laugh.gif The next second, you'd never know it and he's kissing and going "awwww" again. Maybe they're ALL psycho! biggrin.gif
