Glowbird
Hi,

My name is Susan and I joined your forum last night after putting a deposit on blue quaker born 10/16/08 (sex yet to be determined). I can't wait! The little guy will be joining a family consisting of me, my husband, our 13 cats and four parakeets. Don't worry, the cats are in the house and the birds are in my office/hobby area, which is the upper floor of our garage. I work at home as a writer/glass artist, so I spend most of my day there. The cats are all rescues. Over twenty years, my husband and I have rescued over 200 cats and placed them in good homes. I don't know why I developed a sudden interest in birds, but I guess I wanted something living in my office. I love listening to the noises of the parakeets as I write. It even inspired me to put a cockatoo in the novel I'm writing now. So, any of you who own cockatoos, I would love to hear about your experiences rolleyes.gif .

Next week I am going to visit my future quaker for the first time. My husband will be taking pictures, so maybe I will have something to post.

Congratulations Susan!! And a big welcome to the group! It's a wonderful place to learn about quakers and no question is considered dumb so please feel free to ask any you have. But beware this group is very addictive!

So pull up a perch and join in!

Congrats and welcome. I dont know what is involved in your glass work so Im just bringing up a word of caution. This is what the forum is about. If your procedure is heating a solder or emitting somekind of fumes.. then your art area may not be the best place for your new baby. Only you know that. But birds air sacs are quite susceptible to smells. Harmful or if not fatal effects can occur. Other than that...enjoy your new baby for many , many years.

Thanks, Kate, but not to worry. I'm a lampwork artist. My lampwork studio is in a separate building and has a great ventilation system. I use my office/studio for making jewelry, drawing, and sometimes cutting glass. I will not let the birds into that area. I can block it off when they are out of the cage.
