Hey all,
As some of you know, I was going to take in another QP that a family could no longer keep. Apparently he needed to go asap because someone in the family developed allergies to him and they could no longer care for him. The woman was supposed to let me come get him over a month ago when a family emergency came up. She had to go out of town and said that she would get back in touch in a week...that was almost a month ago. She will no longer respond to any emails. This just drives me crazy! I understand there was a family emergency, but what about Shakespeare? What happened to him? It bothers me that he might be sitting there in their house not being cared for, overlooked, becuase the family is so distracted by what happened. I just wish I could have gotten him out of there before this happened. I hope he is being cared for!! Sigh...we'll see what happens. Maybe after a few months she'll get back in touch with me...at least to tell me that he is ok, or they found another home, or they decided to keep him!

Shannon I am so sorry for the disappointment. In most cases its a matter of changing their mind but too ashamed or embarrassed to admit it. More than likely they have decided to try keeping him or have given him to someone else.

Yeah, I hope that is the case. I just wish she hadn't closed our line of communication. Maybe I could have helped her in some way if she did decide to keep him or give him to a friend. Either way, I just wish she would tell me because I became emotionally involved with this bird and now I have no idea what happened to him!

Yeah, hopefully. I really wanted a friend for Darwin during the day, plus I thought I would be a good home for the little guy. I did recently take in two budgies, so Darwin isn't entirely alone anymore, although they are still being quarantined. There is a green quaker at a petco where I live and he was originally $899, but is now $200. I have thought about getting him. He has a head FULL of pin feathers and attacks, and I mean attacks, the glass when you walk by his cage. He has been there for months too, so I know they are just trying to get rid of him. Poor thing. There is NO WAY they are handling that bird. I hate the idea of buying birds, but I still wonder if maybe I could talkt he manager down so that I could rescue this little guy before he ends up going to ANOTHER petco to be on display. He deserves much better! I'm still deciding what to do about that...

Hey Shannon,
Sorry to hear that you wont be getting Shakespere.
I know what it like when you plan for something and get emotionally involved and it falls apart.
I would pester the petco manager until he relents.
You have nothing to loose but your time.
We had someone else on the forum get a ripper of a discount on a quaker then they also had a 15% discount.
(cant remember who you are sorry)
Good luck.
Chin up.

I, too, am really sorry about your huge disappointment. People who have to give up their pets need to thank their lucky stars that people like YOU are out there and willing to take them in, love them and give them the second chance that most so desperately deserve.
I have worked in dog rescue for 20 years and have had this happen before. It's beyond frustrating. They contact you--all frantic as if the animal must go at that very minute and then they disappear. Many of them reappear, however, when another crisis arises and they want to be bailed out again. I do hope that the family just changed their minds and are too embarrassed to admit it. What would be truly awful is if they just dropped the bird off at a shelter or abandoned it.
I hope that it not the case with Shakespeare and I hope you get some answers soon!

thanks everyone. I knew you would all understand, even though it doesn't really change anything. I really hope Shakespeare is happy somewhere right now, that's my main concern.
And I think I will talk to the Petco manager. Although I am opposed to buying animals as pets, I do think that taking him out of this situation is best for him. Maybe I could at least give them some advice to get him to be more socialized in case they won't let me take him. At least that way he might have a better chance of being bought in the near future instead of wasting away in a pet store. He has already been there so long!

Yeah, I about fell over too when I saw 899. for a qp! The average price here in Dallas for a green qp is 150.00- 200.00. I had no idea that they were ever priced as high as 899!

I have found that Petco and other big pet stores really over price their birds. When my gf was looking for a parrotlet, they had two that they were selling for $500 each, and she found one at a small local pet store for $200. I've also seen Sun Conures at Petco for over $600 when they are available at another local pet store for $300.

Yeah, $899 for a GREEN QP! They also have a blue there who has been there just as long as the green, but he is still $899. There was another green right next to the green there now and he must have been sold (or moved to another Petco) and he was $899 too! The two greens attacked each other through their bars, now it's just the one poor little green all by himself...no bird next to him anymore. I feel so bad for him...

I hope you hear something soon. If they changed their minds, at least they could TELL you that and not leave you hanging and worrying about Shakespeare.
Our Petsmart has a green cheeked conure they've had for about three months, maybe longer, and they want $349 for him (her?). That price is probably why they still have him and I can't swing it, either, or I'd get him out of there. He has a nice enclosure and lots of toys and is as friendly as can be, and people stop by and scratch his head through the bars, but he needs a home. I saw a conure at the bird fair a couple of weeks ago that they wanted $400 for, so apparently that's the going rate around here, but sheesh, who can afford that?

Try not to look at it as"buying" a pet,but simply putting out some cash to save a life,to give that poor little Quaker a better life than one stuck behind a glass wall.I,too, have worked in dog rescue for many years and if I had all the money I've given to people for their unwanted and uncared for dogs, simply to get them out of horrendous situations,I'd be rich.Taking him out of PetCo IS best for him.Good luck,Shannon

Thanks, I know what you mean. It's just hard to make that decision because I do not want to support the pet industry or, more specifically, the breeding of birds for the pet industry. I want to STOP birds from being bred and sold as pets, so making this decision goes against what I believe in, especially because I know that as soon as he is out of the Petco, another bird just like him will be along soon to replace him. It's very frustrating for me. Plus I feel badly for the other species of birds that are at Petco. How fair is it that I single out the quaker simply because I have one at home. What about the other birds??
As far as Shakespeare goes, at least he is already in a home, hopefully. I feel slightly better about not knowing where he is because he isn't in a pet store, than I do about this poor little guy behind glass, with one or two toys and an ALL SEED DIET! That can't be healthy! (Shakespeare does at least get pellets and fresh food).

So, I went and talked to someone who worked at Petco yesterday and Gizmo (that was the green quakers name) has been sold. I don't know if I'm happy or not about that. The woman said he was sold to someone with bird experience but that's all they knew. I'm glad he is finally out of there though, but I know he will just be replaced by another.

I work by a PetSmart that also had a Green-cheeked Conure on sale from $399 to $349. Too expensive for me, but I too fell in love with this little guy. I took out my cell and took a video

His cage was behind glass but whichever side I went to, he followed. When I was taking the video and looking at my phone, which was in front of my face, he kept peeking up and over, trying to see me, or what I was looking at. He was precious! I hated leaving

I work with people and their pets all day long, I guarantee you that the lady gave Shakespere to someone else. She just up and gave him away to someone who was THERE, and he has a new home.
That is why she won't get back with you.
There is a free Q P Rescue in Ohio, where are you at? This bird was a pet and his boy went off to college.
He was a screamer and a cage protector, but has gotten better, although he annoys his rescue hom with ringing a bell constantly, they think he would get better with more attention.
Is Ohio an option for you? So far he doesnt' pluck or anything,,,,

I'm in Maryland, North of Baltimore. Ohio isn't too far. There is another QP here that needs a home that I am waiting to here from. But I am interested in the QP in Ohio. If anything, I could probably get you in touch with someone from Phoenix Landing who could get him up for adoption or into a new home.
