Here's some pictures of Ollie's new playstand. It still needs to be wrapped in Sisal rope. Any ideas how to attach the rope to the PVC. I'm not sure, is hot glue safe?

No, hot glue is not safe. Maybe you could tuck the ends under a few of the last rounds........or fasten them with a few rounds of vet tape.
It's a grea looking playstand!

tjbird - Hmmmm? If a spot of hot glue were applied to the PVC pipe of the stand for every 4 or 5 wraps of the rope to tack it in place, IMHO it should not present a health problem. The trick is that no hot glue is exposed above the rope, remains underneath only. The glue used to join the PVC is far more toxic IMO..... Kent a.k.a. New QP Dad

Looks good!
Hot glue is safe as long as it can't be ingested by the bird. My friend makes PVC stands and she hot glue guns the PVC together, but the glue in on the inside and is not exposed for the birds to find. As for wrapping it with sisal, I would just tie it on tightly and not use any glue, that way you can remove it and rewrap it when it gets used/chewed etc. and you're not risking the Q eating any glue...
Thanks for sharing it with us, you did a great job!

That is a nice play stand. I have no opinion on glue, because it's listed among the "toxic to birds" if inhaled or ingested substances. I would hate to tell you it's safe and then have you be the ONE person that was the exception to the rule.
I have wondered about the benefits of using this material. I had started to make one, then though natural...some kind of wood..would be better for their feet. I wonder if their claws ever get tired of grasping?
This is slippery so I assume they would have to put some effort into holding on?...not that holding on is a "bad" thing.
*It's that "inhaled" that bothers me...if anything goes wrong, or if a lamp is accidentally put too close, would fumes result? I don't know..I would play it safe and follow vet suggestions NOT to use glue around birds. PVC sticks in pretty well on it's on without glue, so I would use tape (as tj suggested), or tie the rope with other rope (can you drill a hole in the PVC and knot rope in that way?)

ooops It was 3 AM! Obviously, I missed the word "wrapped!"
I am thinking if it's possible to drill a holes though the ends..the rope could be knotted though a hole..wrapped down the pole and knotted though a bottom hole?

Thanks guys!! It's my very first one I ever made. I wanted to get a jump on it before he/she came. However I'm still waiting, I guess the breeder said spring now. Not sure last time I talked to her her husband was dyeing, so I don't really want to bother her.
Oh by the way, does anyone know where I can buy vet wrap? I was thinking Petsmart but the nearest store is close to 60 miles away, and I didn't want to make a trip if they didn't have it.
Thanks

That is a very nice playstand and I know your birdie will be very pleased....
In the wrapping process, why don't you consider vet wrap, therefore there is no glue or anything...it sticks to itself and doesn't come unwrapped.......that is what I used on a piece of pvc for Harley's shower perch....
Hope you find something that will be suitable for you....

i think your stand looks marvelous! i think another option, besides the rope and the vet wrap, would be to rough up the surface of the PVC with some sandpaper. i've not done that method, so i won't vouch for effectiveness.
vet wrap, to my understanding, is used a lot on horses? i get mine at a store called farm and fleet, but you could try tractor supply or any other general type store that has horse/big farm animal supplies. our farm and fleet has clothes, dog/cat stuff, rabbit supplies, horse supplies, car supplies, candy, tools, hunting/fishing stuff, paint. you name it, they got it.
which reminds me, i'm running low on vet wrap. ours runs about $2.50/roll and comes in all sorts of awesome colors.

LOOKS GREAT, Here is a video of My Keiko's playstand made from PVC Pipe. Put those bird perch covers (sandpaper of sorts) on the pvc. But I also found that wrapping the pipe with just that green florist tape works just as well.
OF COURSE I'VE CHANGED IT A BIT---JUST TOOK OFF 2 OF THE PLASTIC GRIDS AND ADDED BOTTLEBRUSH TREE LIMBS. I HEARD THEY ARE OK FOR BIRDS.
Hope that youtube video comes up - if not--so sorry guys---trying to get it right.

Cool video - LOVE the playstand! That is such a great idea with the A/C grids as ladders. I might try something like that. I love making things for the birdies.
Keiko is soooo cute and snuggly too
Thanks Tina, ONE FINE DAY I will learn to actually PUT THE VIDEO IN THE POST - LOL. I'm really computer LITERATE - but this forum is a little tricky.

Almost forgot...out of curiosity, about how much would you say that cost to make?

Thanks!
The total was around $60 the break down it $17 for the PVC, $47 for 300 feet of Sisal rope, and $8 for three role of vet wrap. However, I didn't use all of the vet wrap and I ordered extra rope for spare.

In the future you can accomplish the same thing without any fasteners or glue. I learned this in the boy scouts hehe, its called rope whipping. here is an article, i would reccomend method 2, its a nice very playstand though. http://www.ropeworks.biz/reader/whipping.pdf

I too was going to suggest vet wrap. You can use such pretty colors, the toenails don't get caught in it and if you put it on the vertical bars, they can safely climb those too. AND it's very easy on the feet (won't make them raw)

bumping as i am real desperate to find some feeders to go on pvc playstand!
longawaitedquaker
Aug 3 2009, 04:37 PM
The feeders were made with cut pieces of log that my hubby drilled out the middle of so that the crocks would sit inside and not fall off. I have seen for pvc gyms people using pipe caps. I will see if I can find you a picture.
I'm so sorry. I didn't even realize that there were any new posts. I used a PVC end cap, then glued a male threaded fitting to the bottom, then purchased the female adapter for the same size fitting to thread onto. So actually the PVC crocks twist off, and then got some stainless steel dishes inserts.
If your still interested I can get some close up pictures for you.
Again I'm sorry, for the late reply

I used 4 tiny dots of super glue, and surprisingly it's on their real good. I then attempted to wrap it in vet wrap just incase some of the glue came around the edge.
