Full Version: Want To Adopt In Va Area
Quaker Parrot Forum > Avian Re-Homing > Member's Birds Needing New Homes
Annah
Hi everyone. I am looking to adopt a quaker, or will happily take any other type of bird that you need a home for.

We have been debating the decision to get a quaker for almost 2 years now. It's only the huge price tag at the local pet store that has stopped us. I have now bought a new home, and have a spot picked out to build a 6' cage in my living room. I only need a feathered friend to go with the cage.

For my bird experience, I have had cockatiels since I was about 8 years old, bred them as a teenager, and have a pair now. My dad has a blue front amazon that he has had for about 20 years, so I do have some large bird experience. She didn't particularly like women, so she wouldn't let me do more than pet her, feed her, and take her out of the cage (no nifty tricks because she didn't like me enough).

I am well aware that all large birds are a lifetime commitment, and require daily bonding, play, and social interaction. I do have small children, but my children are not allowed to torment animals. They only can pet our birds with supervision, and are not allowed near the cage at any other time. Daily play time will be during the younger kids nap time, and after they are in bed. Once my youngest is old enough not to frighten the bird (or the bird becomes accostomed to screeching) he/she will have play time during other hours as well. I am a stay at home mom, and will be a homeschooling mom soon, so the bird will never be left alone during the day time. I am only 28 now, so
I should have at least 40 years to dedicate to a larger bird.

I really love just about any type of parrot, large or small, and will happily take any breed. I will do all required reading to learn as much as possible about the breed if I am offered a bird.

I am located in eastern Virginia on the coast, and willing to travel approximately 4 hours in any direction. While I don't have a lot of money, I am willing to pay a rehoming fee if you are located close by. If I have to travel a long distance, the gas money will probably kill my budget.

Thank you for considering me as a possible home for your feathered friend.

Anna, I am certain ypu will find your bird. Someone had a bird to rehome from Va or WV on here last week.

I am so impressed with your post. I have seen way too many birds injured or killed by small children and too many small children injured by birds because they scare the bird and get seriously bitten. It seems you are quite cautious about that. Good for you. One cannot be too careful.

I hope you find your bird soon. I believe it will be one lucky birdie! wink.gif

Oh... and WELCOME to the forum!
Annah
I've always liked animals more than people (lol! they're nicer, and you always know how they feel about you). Of course it's not quite the same since I've had kids, but *my* kids won't be the ones chasing cats, or kicking birds at the park. I refuse to have kids that are so mean.

I think people and animals need to learn to live together responsibly. There's no reason for kids being so mean. (like my nephew for example, who's 4, and loves to pull cats tails). My husband was one of those kids who killed a parakeet because he tried to pet it, and squeezed too hard. For that very reason, our tiels cage door is locked so the kids can't open it, in case they get the thought in their head to sneak in and pet the bird. The kids are completely forbidden from touching the birds cage at all. I tell them the birds will bite them wink.gif They are allowed to pet our tiels only when they are being held by me or my husband, and they can only use 1 finger to pet their back. I'm sure that will change as they get older, but it works well for young kids.

I felt like I would be deceiving someone if I didn't mention the kids in my post, but I wanted everyone to know that we do take precautions. We've had our tiels since my oldest was born, and there's never once been a problem. I'm lucky I guess that my husband works late hours, so we have quite a bit of time after the kids are in bed for birdy play time. So I don't feel too bad with my tiels "locked" in their cage while the kids are awake.

Thanks for the vote of confidence!

Anna -

I also wanted to welcome you to the QP Forum and applaud your desire to rehome a QP! biggrin.gif
Given the current economy, many folks are having to make a difficult choice! Feeding their family or caring for their pets.... huh.gif There has been a flood of people giving up their dogs, cats and birds for care in shelters.

Here is a link to a well known bird rescue / rehoming information website that is endorsed by Shannon a.k.a. "Smurph1":

http://www.avianwelfare.org/index.htm
They link to 3 bird rescues in your area:

Tiny Wings in Need.... http://www.tinywingsinneed.us/index.htm

Project Perry - Central VA Parrot Sanctuary.... http://www.projectperry.com/

This last one is endorsed by a friend and neighbor of mine Patricia Sund a.k.a. "Parrot Nation" who volunteers to help place birds here in south Florida....

We recently did have a forum member that many of us felt was treated unfairly as a volunteer foster mom for them! That said, I seriously doubt that other animals in your home would create the same concern in approving your adoption of a bird....

Anna... I am always pleased to learn about someone that first considers rehoming or rescuing a parrot, rather than running out to the local chain pet store! wub.gif

Just checking in to see if you have had any luck on finding a Quaker, yet? Let us know!

Nope, still no birdie friend. I tried several of the people in NC, no luck there. I saw one hit my local craigslist a few days ago, and was gone almost immediately. I am about to expand my search to a larger area if I can't find any more close by. I have a sneaking suspicion that I will be desperate enough to go to the pet store by the time I actually find one. I was at the pet store a few days ago, and thankfully they didn't have any there, or I would have been forced to make a tough decision. wink.gif

I don't know were you are located in Va but they are supposed to be having a bird fair in Va Beach you might have some luck there. I can't remember when they are having it (I can't remember nothing). Also Phoenix Landing is having a seminar in Charlottesville next month. They are supposed to be bringing birds. I could give you more info if you are interested.

Welcome to the forum, Annah!! As a mother, I can relate to precautions taken with our kids and pets. My kids are older then yours (15 and 12), but grew up with all kinds of pets in their lives. I really enjoy watching my children interact with my birds, most especially because they are so loving and careful with them.

I wish you luck in your search and it sounds like any bird to land in your home will be a lucky one smile.gif
jujusaffiemom
did you check on the blue that I found?
Annah
They used to have a posting on CL, but that ad was deleted, or inactivated or something. I contacted them, hopefully I'll hear something back soon.

If this fails, I think I'm going to have my name put on the waiting list of a local breeder. Mabe I'll find one before then, but the way this is going, I'm starting to get depressed over the wait. sad.gif

I'm contenting myself now by buying the supplies for the larger cage that I had planned to build.

I have better luck with www.kijiji.com although saffie did come from cl
Annah
Everyone keep your fingers crossed! There was a bird on CL last week, and its ad vanished the next day, and I never heard anything back. The ad reappeared, so I emailed again. I got a response back, and am supposed to go pick up tomorrow morning!!
She says he's 10 mo old, and coming with cage for $75. He's only about 30 miles or so from my house, another city, but not that far really.

I'm so excited I don't know if I'm gonna sleep tonight!

I'm supposed to pick him up around 10am, so I'll probably have an update posted before anyone even reads this! LOL

Got him! He's home now. His name is Kiwi. Of course it turns out there are some agression issues sort of. I'm going to post over in another forum, and hopefully someone can give me some tips.

Congratulations. So cute.
Carrie~Anne
Oh, he's cute!!!! And 10 months isn't very old at all. I bet you'll have him loving you in no time wink.gif

Anna: just saw the post where you found Kiwi on CL and you did post a picture of him. He's adorable. Again...Congratulations. I hope everything works out for ya'll.

Annah, I wish I had gotten to reply earlier. I have a Quaker that I would love to find a good home for. I'm in Suffolk so you wouldn't have had to travel far. It looks like you didn't t have to go far anyway. I'm glad you got Kiwi though. If you want a buddy for Kiwi or if there is anyone out there that would like a Quaker let me know. Thanks.
Reesie
Brody I am in Maryland and have no problem traveling to VA. I would love to talk about possibly offering your Quaker a home.
My Quaker passed last November.
I am home all day and spoil my birds rotten. I have owned a bird of some kind since I was 14.
I sent you a PM to share more about myself and my home.

Thank you,
Marie
