Today i was given a gorgeous handreared 14 week old cocky. He is absolutely gorgeous personality with a bit of difference. . . .

Charlie (iv named him) has a condition called Beacon Feather where he likes to pluck his feathers. It is not a severe case he does still have alot of feathers but this condition is apparently caused by the immune systum being very weak and attacking the blood feathers and causing irritation. THIS CONDITION IS CONTAGEOUS TO BIRDS ONLY

He has seen the vet today and although in good health otherwise i am unable to keep him as a pet because of the risk he poses to my other birds sad.gif

It is very sad as the lady who brought him to me told me that he was about to be put to sleep because no one wanted him. And my heart strings yanked and tears caught in my eyes as she told me his plight.

He is 14 weeks old has been lovingly handreared and cared for until he showed these symtoms and then the previous owner (a breeder of many birds) desided to have him put down because of the risk he poses to her flock. So i said i would take him and try to find him a home that doesnt have any other birds or at least none that would share the same living areas as Charlie would.

The vet said there is no reason why Charlie shouldnt live a long and happy life even if he doesn't look like the standard cockatoo Charlie still thinks he's a normal cocky and thats all that matters.

He has to be given regular showers to relieve his irritation and reduce the feather pulling and during winter has to wear a hand made jumper but other then that he lives and gets treated like any other bird.

Charlie is free to anyone who thinks they can give this beautiful boy the chance at life that i unfortunately cant. He needs to be an inside boy as he cannot regulate his own temperature and he needs to be the only bird that lives inside.

This disease is only contracable to other birds not to cats dogs or people. He is a typical 14 week old cocky who just wants cuddles and to play a little. He is very inteligent and trusting of people.

If you think u or anyone u might know could help this little man in his plight for the right to live even as a featherless boy please contact me.

Charlie comes with his cage and toys and is free to the right home only.

Thanks

Actually its called Beak and Feather disease...Or BFD for short. poor little guy. If its truly beak and feather disease, there is no known cure. Bless you for taking him under your wing...and caring for him.

Bless you. I hope he gets a new home.

Oh my gosh! If this is truly a case of PBFD, from what I know of it, it's HIGHLY contagious meaning any birds in your home already have it.

How sad!

Since Charlie has already passed, I hope the rest of your flock is going to be ok sad.gif

He has? Did I miss a few posts here? I take it he's not ok then? sad.gif

I was going to say I'd take him, but since it's contagious I can't have him inside with my flock.

Sorry to hear it. What happened in the end?
