I am a member of the QP Society and I go to the site and read posts, Mattie Sue Athens was doing a test with several people, I haven't heard anymore about it other than she really thinks its a great product..you must follow the direction and should see an improvement within a couple of weeks...if I find out more I will post it...smile.gif

I recently adopted a plucker. I'm giving him Naturade Aloe Detox, passion flower and spraying him with Georges Aloe. If this doesn't help I might try Pluck No More. Would be interested in how well your baby does on it.

Hi, I'm Susan and my bird, Casey, has been plucking off and on since the Spring. First time, she plucked herself really bald, all across chest/belly and one leg. Then totally stopped for about 3 wks and the feathers were almost completely filled in and wham! She started again. This time not so much, but bad enough! Again, she stopped plucking, let them grow most of the way in and started again! She plucks almost every day now, some days 4-5 feathers, some days more.
I've heard of the pluck no more and am seriously thinking of trying it, (on Casey, NOT me!! LOL), but wonder if it is supposed to "cure" the plucking or if it is something I'll have to keep her on for the rest of her hopefully long (and well-feathered) life. Do you know? Nothing I've read indicates if it's a short term or long term thing.
I hope it works for Madison! Good luck!

i did ask about them being on it for life and he told me no they say if you bird doesnt improve in 120 days to seek an avian vet, i have a number its in the car and hubby has it when he gets back i will post the number, the name is richard king and i spoke with his son, after giving him madisons ee ahs and o's i asked if he thought it would help and he told me yes unless there were other health probs and i told him i had madison to the vet and she said madison was bored, but no not for life

The only other thing I found was that Mattie Sue says it will not work if the plucking problem is food allergies

Quote of Mattie Sue:

"If the bird's behavior is related to allergies to something in the diet this
will not resolve the issue, so if you're really serious about recovery, you
might also switch to Roudybush Rice/allergy identification diet."

Nancy,
How do you give it to Madison? Do you add it to his water? I have heard that it's good stuff, but no personal experience with it....can't wait to see how it works on Madison. What are the ingredients?
I know I loved the Naturade ALoe detox, but didn't know it would work for plucking..It is mainly a liver detoxifyer, but hey, if it works, that would be great.
Didn't you say that Madison started plucking after you had been away from home? I know I worry about Gabby and that's why I am trying to get her comfortable with Gene...I know Gene is working so hard to be her friend and it's working...Gabby is liking him more..not in love, but definately liking him more..LOL!!!
Keep us all posted ok?

Keep us posted: Nancy why don't you use this page as like a daily journal posting anything you notice ups or downs. This way you have a log of your journy with this product and we all can benifit from it. The log could be helpful if it works or doesn't work when speaking to the Vet in the future.

Paulie the 2nd was a plucker, but instead of using that plucking stuff, I used alot of water in a spray bottle, it does help you have to keep their skin pretty moist, so everychance i got that i saw him pplucking he got a full soaking of water, i also brought him some chew toys to entertain his mind on something else than his feathers. it took alittle bit of time, but it worked

I had read somewhere that birds don't pluck their feathers if they're wet, so when Casey first started plucking I misted her every time she yanked one out. At first I thought it helped but later it didn't seem to so much, plus she got to where she seemed to think bath time was punishment. I didn't want that, so backed off. Maybe I'll try to increase again.
She doesn't seem interested in her toys most days, either, just in having me entertain her, lol. Unfortunately for her, my son and I are about to try homeschooling for the first time so Miss Casey Mae needs to entertain herself a bit better! Any suggestions on toys?? We have 2-3 hanging fuzzy things with bells and wood chunks, some balls with bells inside, some giant jacks, and assorted things I've made with towel strips, wooden balls and giant buttons. A lady at a pet shop suggested some feather toys (hopefully she'd yank those out rather than her own!) but I haven't found any.

paulie 2 was always looking forward to the sprays , he would even run up to the sprayer and patiently wait.i would sing when i'd do it so he looked at it as a fun game, his favorite was 'wet hide and seek, i'd hide myself and he'd find me once he did i spritz him once and then run off and hide again. it was funny. i swear you can here him sigh' ahhhhhhhh'everytime i wet him down. My friend used a plucking thing on his bird but it made it enirely worse, it was hurting more than helping, i gave him the mist idea and she did the same thing- stood there calmly and was looking forward to it.

i think since each bird has a different perception on things, you should try something else, Baths in general do help with the feather plucking not always spraying.if you can get your little one into a bowl of water and praise it everytime she splashes you it keeps her mind off of plucking. try to make up games to keep the bird active. it also could be a possiblilty that it has an infection ,
i suggest a trip to the vet is also advised as a precaution.

cause once they pluck it can get far worse like Mutilation, which i how i lost paulie 2.

I'm very sorry for your loss, I can't imagine how hard it must have been.
I have had Casey to a regular vet who treats birds as well, but just to be sure I'm going to take her to an avian vet. She seems perfectly healthy, eats well, poops well (lol)--just seems particularly attached to my presence and close attention. She does get a bath or misting almost every day but her favorite is showering with me. She stands on the edge of the spray, "hunkers down" and closes her eyes. I sing to her a lot, too (she's very forebearing!), and she dances along with the QP Jig!

I have been using some spray called avi-soother it seems to be working with Harley! I got the spray from the vet it has aloe in it so it soothes his skin and stops him from picking at his pin feathers when they are coming in. My only problem with Harley is him preening and gettin the little white sheaths off of his new feathers coming in. He will not let me put him in a towel and do the pinch thing on his pin feathers and when he does it he gets to aggresive with them which is when i think he pulls them out. I took him for blood work and it came back that he was low in proteins so the vet gave me vitamins for his water and also she thought he had allergies to god only knows what but she gave him so antihistamine. He is doing alot better now though he has ripped out one pin feather after I had to brag and say that he hasnt done it earlier in one of my post but I was watching him do it and he was having a really hard time getting the sheaths off his pin feathers. I would try the avi-soother and see if that helps you can order it online but not sure what the site is i would have to look it up! GOOD LUCK!

Pluck no More won't work if the condition is medical, so go to a vet and have all the blood work and fecal culture stuff out of the way.

It also won't work if it is an allergy.

Basically, it works like a natural kind of anti-anxiety medication. So if your bird started plucking because of sexual frustration, separation anxiety, or a new home... something like that, it may be helpful.

I used pluck no more when Grace started barbering her feathers. She fell and broke her wing, and started chew on her feathers from the pain. She turned her whole beautiful body in a puff ball in days:

I gave it to her because I hoped it would help, in addition to the pain medication, calm her down long enough to break the habit. Grace had JUST started destroying her feathers, and I was very lucky. I was able to stop the behavior before it became a habit.
This is Grace two days ago:

So, I would recommend the product for birds who have recently started plucking (still go to the vet!), and in conjunction with something like a collar for birds who have plucked for awhile. It if is a continuing behavior that has no medical basis, then it may be habit. Keeping them from being able to reach their feathers and giving them some anti-anxiety medication may help. Keep the pluck no more up when you remove the collar.

Also, pluck no more is for healthy birds who are temporarily so stressed or upset they pluck. Some birds, just like some people, need stronger anti-anxiety medication to help them stop... maybe because of life experiences or maybe just because of the way their brains work!

Good luck, I really think that if you understand how the product works, it can be REALLY useful!

well Tiki has been to the vet and it's not medical. He's just been pluking for so long now that it's habit. I get him new toys all the time and he loves them but he's still hurting himself. I know it stems from his previous owners cause when i got him he was bald and scabby. but now that there is a new scab it worries me. All i know is if I put him on pluck no more he'll have to stay on it forever. and price wise that worries me.

You all should try this...it works faster and is safer (IMO) then pluck no more. Half the ingredients in pluck no more are toxic to birds if you go down the list and compare. It didn't work for any of my plucker's but this stuff did:

Ricky wouldn't let me use anything but this on him, including water.

I dont mean to be rude, but I looked and this is water that an electric current has been run through. It ups the PH but from what I can tell, its just slightly acidic water.

I', just assuming i'd have to use it forever. I haven't seen him pluck i can't catch him doing it but when i lift up his head he's all scabbed and it looks like it hurts. I don't think his neck and chest feathers will even grow back i think he's going to be bald forever.

Today my husband and I purchased a bottle of Pluck No More from a store. Very cool store that deals in nothing but birds...bird food, toys, cages, they board birds (bird sit?), etc. The owner is very passionate about birds and is a pool of information. He claims that the Pluck No More works wonders. So we just started Lexi on it today, 6-8 drops from an eye dropper three times per day. She already had her first 6 drops. My fingers are crossed! Oh, he said you wouldn't have to use it forever, as that was one of our questions.
Andie's Mom
If you read the directions it says it says you may need to keep them on it for 90 days. I used it on my repetitive plucker/mutilator and also used a cape on her at the same time...and Knock on wood I haven't seen a relapse in 2 months so so far its worked for us. I also keep a feather boa in her cage so she tears it up rather than herself.
