Quaker Parrot Forum > Avian Re-Homing > Member's Birds Needing New Homes
Poopilly
Hello everyone, sad.gif

It's me again Elaine back in January I tried to find new homes for my 4 little guys! I got someone here in the forum Paula (I hope you don't mind Paula) that I gave my 2 Lovebirds too...they are doing wonderful (Thanks to God and Paula).
Bach them I decided to try to keep my 2 Quakers, but now I can’t: explanation below. Lucky my Green Quaker I believe he is around 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 years old (DNA Male), and Blueberry my Blue Quaker is 3 1/2 years old (DNA Female). They are both very healthy, actively and want lots of attention. I now am living in a Condominium (apt.) and they are so loud!!! I don't know if it is because of Spring time...But people can hear them all the time outside my apt. (My neighbor have a dog and he keep her it a collar so she don't bark , and my birds are making so much noise). If I keep them inside they scream, I keep them outside they scream...not sure how to resolve the problem ... I try as much as I can, but I have a 2 years old in the house too and can't have them so loud like this anymore....Both pairs have being caged together always...so I will not consider separating them. I'm asking for $300 for both (I have their DNA certificate too included).
I would like to keep it local if possible....please help....I'm not in a rush but I need to face that they need someone with more time, attention, experience, space and most important love/forever home where they can be happy. I'm know sad to post here again...but like with the lovebirds I will sure be happy to see they having what they need, which I cannot provide for them right now.

Thanks
Elaine

Hi lovemyboys I just reply to your pm!!!! Please let me know what you decide, and thanks....hugs Elaine

I do want to mention to all that I got someone in WV really interested in my Quakers but I would love to find someone here. Like I told the lady I want to make sure my babies are safe, in good hands and that I would be able to get fedback on the time to time....so I'm trying to get to know the lady a little more....what you all think about this????
Way2Bizzy
I wouldn't discount the non-board member just because she isn't "one of us". Just make sure you're able to have whatever conversations are necessary to gain the appropriate level of trust/ confidence. Can she/he provide any references (including vet ref) regarding prior bird/ pet experience?

Good luck to you in finding a great home for the little ones.

I have someone that was from this forum contacting the lady for me and see if she is interested, and if she would be the right person for my babies....I had entrusted her to help me because I don't know who her friend is right now and I don't have any way to get in contact with her too. So I will be waiting to see what will happen, I will keep everyone posted and meanwhile if someone here would like to have them I will be considering that person too and would be very happy about it too. Thanks
Elaine

any updates??

Not really still waiting to see what will happen.....I got a lady from PA, but now she said they are illegal there...so she don't want it like that. She is afraid they would take them away and euthanized the birds. The lady from the forum said she was going to speak to her friend when she goes back to the vet...it appear to me she is a vet tech (from WV)....., but I really hope to find someone sooner. Thanks everyone. Elaine

Do not send them to Pa as they will euthanize on the spot. I had it happen to a friend of mine. They do not play around there.

I know....I just cannot believe how can people do this things....so shame on them....and Thanks...Love Elaine

I am sorry you have to give up your babies sad.gif I do have a few suggestions that worked for both Quakers:
1.) Yes, during this time of year, they get loud (Apr- May)
2.) Give them baths or showers everyday so they feel good and spend their time preening (can't scream and preen at the same time)
3.) Make sure there isn't something scaring them (people walking by, too loud of noise (TV), vacumes, broom handles, etc).
4.) Have a small squirt bottle with water (purified if possible) and say "No screaming or I will squirt you" in a nice calm voice (they love emotion, so don't give it to them smile.gif If they scream again squirt them in the chest (No where else). You must drain out the water bottle every night and let it air dry or you will be squirting icky stuff (water grows bacteria) on them and jepordizing their health.
5.) Upon the second offense in a 30 min time period, tell them "Shhh babies are sleeping and no screaming or you will go into the washroom" if they scream, put them in your bathroom, lights off , door shut, for a time out 5-10 minutes. When you go to move them back in "civilization" remind them, "No screaming or you will go back in the washroom" Follow thru when necessary. If you can't move them to the bathroom, try covering their cages completly and don't talk to them - it is a birdy time out!
6.) After a few days of Basic Training, they should shape up. You will have to be diligent, they are like having a 5 year old in the house. Quakers are very, very smart and know exactly what is going on - don't let them fool you smile.gif
My 1st Quaker was trained within 5 days. On occasion, she would try to push my buttons and I would repeat the process. Usually seeing the squirt bottle and me shaking it was enough. I just got a new Quaker (Albert E) who was fine until 3 days ago. I couldn't readily find my water bottle but did the time out and after one day he was better behaved smile.gif He now know to tweet, whistle, talk in place of screaming (which is Ok for emergencies only). My sister used this technique on all 6+ birds and worked like a charm smile.gif Good Luck - Maybe you won't have to give them up smile.gif

Please don't use a squirt bottle to discipline birds.

Thanks for all the tips I will be trying....but it is getting ugly : ) ...
Today my husband and I walked to speak with the manager here in the office....we could here my birds 2 blocks away....we could not believe it. I really hope this work, but still if someone in the board would like to consider having them, I would start the process/information/getting to know the new family and them try to arrange to re-home them. I hope this works, but I'm not sure...I'm not always in the apt to correct them...and they still scream when we not around. When I walk home with my son sleeping in my arms....they always end up walking him up....sadly....but I will give a try. Thanks

Do you leave a radio or TV on while you are gone? Maybe sit them by the window (with a towel/cover over the top to prevent too much sun)?
Leave a few morsels of their VVF (very favorite food) in their food bowl as you leave? Good luck!

The TV is on almost all the time!!! They don't see to mind it at all!!! They do spent lots of time outside on my patio....and they still scream a lot there too!!! I give the corn (favorite food), rice, apples,etc...

I wish I could afford to adopt them! RIght now is just so tough for everyone. I am currently having to watch what animals I take in(rescues) so that I do not get over whelmed.
