I had thought I posted this about Ruby here before, but with the week I've had, evidently I didn't. I'm going to copy and paste a pm I replied to Julie who was inquiring how I was feeling because my pain meds have me a bit addled and not sure I can type it all again:

I'm feeling much better, but these meds give me a even more addled brain that I had to start with...LOL! I thought I'd posted about what happened with poor Ruby, but I guess in all the craziness of my past week, I never posted it here. The last time we visited Ruby (about a week ago), I was told by one of the ladies that works there (the only one that I cannot stand) that she had some sort of foot deformity. I unwrapped her and saw it was more like her one foot was actually behind her other and it didn't look like any nest injury or deformity I'd ever seen. Even so, I figured I'd talk to Deb (shop owner) and see what she said because I felt sure this would have been mentioned when we first put the deposit on her. I was also told (by same evil woman) that we had her out too long on our previous visit and she got too cold and developed a crop infection. How being cold would make that happen I don't know, but we never had her out more than 15 minutes at a time, and always wrapped in a towel. So....I called my vet the next day who is also the vet for that shop and he knows they care very well for their birds. I told him what Barbara had told me, and he said first of all, if she has a crop infection, it wasn't caused by getting to cold or being out too long and that they should monitor the babies that are being visited and let people know when it's time for them to go back. He also said from what I told him, he would not recommend me getting this bird.

I was so in love with her though, so I called Deb (shop owner) and talked to her about it. She told me she couldn't figure out what had happened, but that it was def. not a birth defect or a nest injury and was not there when they first got her. She also said what Barbara had told me was not the case at all....she did have the infection, but it was not caused by us having her out too long. She also said that she was now having other issues and that she was taking her to Dr. Hays the next day and would let me know the outcome.

Sadly, they do not know what happened to her legs, but one has had to be amputated and the other may have to also. She also has 2 infections...the crop one, and another I can't recall what it was. She told me that they were keeping her at the vet for the next 3 weeks to see if she can be saved, but most likely she will not make it.

I was devastated, and I got that news the same day of our car wreck....it was a really bad day all the way around. Of course they refunded my money and Debbie was beside herself at what had happened. I've not been back, but am going up there today, because last night, I ended up with a 2 year old female ekkie named Delilah. Teri has been relentlessly checking craigs list and everywhere else trying to find me one, so she called me night before last and said she'd called the woman and told her about me, and found out all about the bird then called me. Sadly, poor Lila (what she calls herself...lol) has been rather neglected and is 2 and still doesn't know how to step up. I was told she was cage aggressive, but I've not had any problems with that at all...she just is having to learn to step up. She is super sweet, and has just not been paid much attention to in her life. The lady has had some major tragedy lately with her child, but still, she is now selling off all her birds, and told me as soon as she has her baby (she's preg.) she is planning on getting more birds. Says that she doesn't have time for them now with 3 kids and one who has been injured in a car wreck, but how is she going to have time for more later with another baby and no husband. Anyway, she will be loved here at our house and we are about to go get some decent food for her and some toys for her cage. She came with a GIANT cage, but it was filthy and only had about 3 toys in it. I think she has been doing a little plucking on her chest, but I imagine that's from shear boredom as I was told she's not been out of her cage in about 4 months. So....I'm about to copy and post this on the forum and I'll put up some pics too. The woman didn't even know what sort of an ekkie she was, but I believe she is a solomon island.

Ok...now for some pics.

I'm sorry to hear about what happened to Ruby, but on the bright side it brought you to Deililah smile.gif

She is a very beautiful bird!!! wub.gif

She's beautiful! I think you're right about the kind of ekkie, too. I met someone last summer who had one that looks just like that and that what he said his was. That guy's bird could talk wonderfully well and even hold a conversation -- I'm not kidding! It was amazing. The bird would say something like "Whatcha doin'?" and the man would say, "I'm talking to this lady (me)" and Ricky (the bird) would say, "whatcha talkin' about?" and the man said "We're talking about you birds" and Ricky said "Ricky???" and the man said, "Yes, we're talking about you." laugh.gif I was agog. I mean, you can't discuss the economy with the bird tongue.gif , but Ricky can really talk.

I'm so sorry to hear about poor Ruby, but maybe it was meant to be so you could rescue Delilah.

I am so sorry about Ruby, sometimes things happen for a reason I guess. Poor baby though I wonder what happened?

Delilah is very beautiful, I hope that you enjoy her.

I hope too that you're taking extra good care of yourself after the accident, lots of rest and relaxation!

I'm so so sorry to hear about Ruby, I have to wonder about the care she was getting, sounds like the lady was trying to find someone to blame. Poor baby....on the other hand I think Delilah was meant to be with you where she will be loved like she is supposed to be.

Take care of yourself and don't do too much, however I also know how much better caring for my birds makes me feel.

Just wanted to say this bird is not even like the same bird I brought home last night. I was told she hated to be scritched, well we spent an hour cuddled up tonight with me scritchng her and getting rid of her pins. Last night and this morning, she would jump anytime someone touched her, now she asks for kisses in the cutest little voice and loved being petted. This was just a neglected bird in need of love and now she's gonna have plenty of it!!!! (she got lots of new toys and perches and good food today too!)

Delilah is a gorgeous looking bird. Congratulations! I am sorry that Ruby didn't work out, but it might of been for the best.....

Oh poor Ruby, It breaks my heart to hear of that kind of lousy care of a bird.
I am so happy that Delilah has found a wonderful new home. Good luck and take care of yourself.

Lisa---Again, It's sad to hear that something did happen to Ruby---and if I were you I would let Deb know that someone must have mistreated her while at the store just to keep you from getting her; like retaliation for some unknown reason...

Anyhow, Delilah is an adorable baby...I know you all will have some wonderful times together; sounds like it has already begun....wishing you many years of joy.....you both are fortunate to have each other...keep us tuned in to the happenings with Delilah.... smile.gif

Odd that you'd say that, because it did occur to me, but I thought "noooo.....she wouldn't do something like that". There is this one lady who works there that when we first starting going there we'd gotta a senegal from. He was a doll, but really loud which surprised me cuz I'd always heard they were quiet. Romeo wasn't always loud, but he had the hightest pitched scream ever if he wasn't with me or hubby and we had to return him under threat of eviction. The odd part about the whole thing was that he had a missing toe, and 2 that were turned the wrong way. That had nothing to do with us returning him, but I did mention it as I wasn't told about it when we bought him which irritated me. That lady was so hateful to me as I stood there crying because I felt so badly about taking him back. I heard her tell someone else that we were only returning him because we didn't want a "less than perfect bird". I told the owner as she was writing up my credit, because we were going to come back for another one as soon as we moved from the apartment to our house. I was just sobbing and said "how could she think that, he was the sweetest bird ever and his deformity did in no way keep him from getting around" She just hugged me and told me the lady in mention was just a grumpy old "blank".

That was over a year ago, and that woman still treats us like we are dirt. We know everyone up there now and they are all super nice....but her. But surely no one could be that cruel. It was her who told me about the foot thing with Ruby, and I swear I almost thought I saw some "satisfaction" in her eyes as she told me my baby was "deformed". It is also same woman who does all the handfeeding. I still can't bring myself to think she'd do something like that, but who knows? If she did, she'll get hers one of these days because that is a horrible thing ya know???

I love the name...she is very cute smile.gif

Maybe the grumpy old B-witch dropped Ruby and broke her legs and wanted to place the blame on you. It's a huge probability that no one will ever know. Anyway, it's a sad thing for Ruby, but a blessing for Delilah. Sounds like she needed a blessing in the worst way. If she did pluck a bit, (and it looks that way), maybe her new-found love and happiness will cause her to stop. Give her a little plain yogurt and a little bit cottage cheese (not at the same time) because if she has a slight infection that causes plucking, that may get rid of it.

She is a real beauty!!!!

Lisa, I was wondering what happened to you...so sorry about Ruby. I saw Delilah on CL also and had a thought...Gladys talked me out of it.

I'm so glad she is with you...you both needed each other it sounds like to me...she is so beautiful, Lisa.

So glad to hear she is coming around so quickly...they know when they are with the right parronts and are loved...she obviously has already picked up on it. wub.gif

Congrats and blessings all around!!!!

BTW Glad to hear you're alright after the accident mellow.gif

Sorry to hear about poor Ruby.

Your new girl is very beautiful. I have an eclectus male. Have you joined any forums for ekkies. Alot of great and knowledgeable people for that species...not that there isn't any here tongue.gif
