Henry has been hiding in his little house and in his sock a lot, but this evening he consented to pose for a photo. Maybe the two treats I gave him softened him up. laugh.gif

I think you should consider getting henry a little friend- they're very social little creatures and it might help him to relax a bit and not be so timid. Just a thought. By the way, Henry is really a nice looking mouse- I love his markings!

According to my research, two male mice will only fight and can even kill each other, though two females can and prefer to live together. Obviously I can't get him a girlfriend unless I want to be overrun with babies. laugh.gif So he's just going to have to batch it, I'm afraid, but as he gets used to us and gets tame, he'll have us for company.

I had 4 male rats and they were very much friends are mice different to rats (other than size) as I was told that they are better off with a friend as they are social critters ... smile.gif

I don't know about rats. I got my information from a mouse forum that's very similar to this one. Some of the people raise and show mice (I had no idea people SHOW mice! laugh.gif ). They're the ones who said you can't house two males together. Most of my research was when I first found Mortimer, when I was looking for information on what to feed him and such. I'll poke around some more and see what else I can find. I don't want Henry to be lonesome, but he has taken possession of that aquarium and house and fixed it all up to suit himself, so I don't want to upset him by foisting a roomie on him unless it would be mean not to. And I don't want to risk his well-being by giving him a roomie if they're only going to fight. Still, if he needs a buddy and they'd get along, I could handle having two. Hubby will roll his eyes, but that won't hurt anyone. tongue.gif The question is, can I trust the clerks at the store to know male from female? Or will I have to make them let me get fresh with the mouse myself? laugh.gif We most emphatically do not want to goof and get him a girlfriend by mistake!

From About.com:
"Mice are nocturnal and very social. They will be very active in the evening and night, but don't expect to do much with them during the day. Being social, they are best kept in groups. A pair of females is the easiest, although larger groups are fine if you provide the cage space. Pairs of males should be avoided, unless they are litter mates, never separated, and given a large enough cage that they can have their own space (unfamiliar males are very likely to fight). Keeping males and females together should be avoided unless you want lots of mice in a short amount of time."

Henry was the only mouse at the shop the day I got him, so we can't get a litter mate for him. They have three or four now in a cage together, but who knows whether they're any relation to Henry. I'll just make sure he has lots of toys and spend as much time with him as possible so he doesn't get bored and lonesome. At first he was completely nocturnal and in the last couple of days, he's been taking naps and getting up to buzz around and play on his wheel at all hours. He was up when I got up this morning and having his breakfast. Or maybe for him it was supper. laugh.gif But he's just as likely to be awake and active during the day.

He's a very neat little mouse. I've cleaned his aquarium twice since Saturday and it really wasn't absolutely necessary either time. It doesn't smell and even the newspaper he tore up to furnish his little house with is torn very neatly. I should've named him Felix Unger. LOL He does turn his food bowl over and spread out the food but I think he's picking through the mixture for the things he especially likes and rejecting the rest. I found some things hidden under his newspaper when I cleaned last night. I didn't even have to take him out to clean. He got into his little house and I just changed his newspaper and refilled his water bottle and wiped up a bit. But I figured when I clean bird cages every night I'll check to see if he needs maid service, too.

My ratties would always poo in a certain spot- they especially liked their toilet to be on top of a box. I don't know why and they were never clear in their explanations to me. Something about squeak squeak and eeeeep, whatever that means tongue.gif
Henry would be easy to slip in a pocket (a shirt pocket would be especially handy) while you're doing your daily routines around the house or watching tv or whatever. I bet he'll like hubbies hair, too! probably worse than birds about wanting to root around in hair and peek out at the world smile.gif

Clyde will probably object if I'm carrying Henry around in a pocket. I doubt the two of them will get along. laugh.gif I did take Clyde with me last night to peek in on Henry at one point (Henry was secure in his aquarium with the lid in place). I leaned over it to talk to him and Clyde said "SQUAWK!" He didn't know who was in there, but he knew it wasn't him, and when Clyde is on Mommy, Mommy's full attention is supposed to be on CLYDE. I also got a good hard nip when I spent a LITTLE too much time talking to Jade. I can greet her. I can even stroke her beak. Then I am supposed to move on. None of this hanging out with Jade nonsense and playing percussion instruments with her is allowed. Playing with Henry is going to have to take place when Clyde is otherwise engaged.
