I've been thinking about getting a cholla cactus perch for Andreas as they look like they'd be a good perch but also a good foraging item as you can hid seeds in them. I was curious if anyone has them and could tell me if they're any good or not. My one worry is if he could get his toes stuck in the little holes.

Haven`t had them but they look very interesting and I am sure fids would love to find a seeded treat in the holes (no food that will go off though)...keen to see if anyone here has them I am sure with such a large group someone will come along that has...

Hana, Harley has one and has had it for quite sometime....he has no problem moving from perch to perch...if you notice in the picture below, the cholla is on the outside and he does use it a lot...so I have to say I'm assuming Harley likes it, he hasn't told me otherwise... laugh.gif and I've never known him getting his toes caught, which is something I kept wondering about myself....

I have a few birds that have them in their cages. they are good for night time perches too. Never used them for treats because I didnt want to encourage chewing up the perch. I dont put them in the cages of the birds that like to chew because I dont want to have to buy more if I can make them last a while. But they are not anymore expensive than a good toy that you would have to replace sometime if they did chew it. they are a softer wood which makes them easy for a chewer to demolish.

Frost sleeps on a cholla perch. It's very easy to hold onto. The budgies love chewing on their cholla and searching in the holes. I have three perches. One is relatively soft and the other two are pretty hard, so there is some variation in the wood. All of my birds like them and use them all the time, so I think they're worth it.

This is Yoo-Hoo's cholla perch. It's about 5.5 feet tall and takes up a pretty large corner in the living room. He hangs out here with us in the evening and we all watch TV or play games.

These things grow wild here. I made this one and have a few other larger cholla's drying now. After they dry I clean them and mount them to some plywood for a base. I add the large dowels for stability and to give Yoo-Hoo someplace even and smooth to stand on. For the life of me, I hadn't thought of hiding goodies in the holes!!!!

There are birds that build their nests in live Cholla...it's a VERY safe place to be, these things are BRUTAL if you happen into a live one!

Enjoy!

Scott
