Full Version: Soaking Everything In His Water Dish
Quaker Parrot Forum > For Quaker Parrots Only > Quaker Parrot Behavior
iPosha
My qp iPosha likes to soak his food and toys in his water dish and i wonder if there is an explanation to this behavior or if he does it just for fun. His water dish is on the opposite end of the cage from his food dish. He takes food and goes all the way to water dish and carefully puts it in it smile.gif So when i come home i find some broccoli, corn and other stuff in his water dish. He likes to soak cheerios for a little bit and than eat them, which i think is pretty funny smile.gif He also likes to put his toys or pieces of his toys into his water dish. I guess he does it just for fun and i don't mind changing his water more often smile.gif Do your quakers do this? Just curious... smile.gif

Max has always done that with he's food, so I put water on one side and food on the other. He sits in the middle.
Also, he loves to stick his head in his fresh, just cleaned water. Shakes it all around, wet the bottom of his cage!
I really don't know what the purpose of that is because he takes a bath in the kitchen sink. huh.gif
Guess he is just a quirkey guy!
Quincy's Slave
Must be a Quaker thing laugh.gif Quincy will scoop his pellets and drop them into his water. His bowl usually doesn't have less than 2 toys stuffed into it, sometimes 3.

Their so funny!!!
Siobhan
Jade is totally a dunker. She dunks her pellets and her water is always an interesting mix of colors by the end of the day, which is why I leave her bathtub in the cage all the time. I have to be at work all day and she has to have something to drink out of after she messes up her water dish!
iPosha
How funny! smile.gif i didn't realize they all do it smile.gif when i come home from work there is always "soup of the day" made by iPosha =)))
Siobhan
Clyde doesn't do it, so it isn't all of them, but apparently it's a lot of them! laugh.gif I've seen Jade do it. She hops all over her cage like an acrobat, and she'll hop over to her food dish, grab a pellet, hop over to the water on the other side, drop it in, wait a few seconds, and fish it out and eat it. She also eats them dry so I suppose the dunking is just for variety. tongue.gif

YUP! Bhurji soaks everything in his water dish too. Dumps his food in there. Also put toys in there! So odd! I have to change his water like 3 times a day!! Gets so icky with all of the food in it!
Jeepingchick
yup yup MoJos nickname is Dunkin McBird because of it!!! worse than a raccoon he is!
Jade+Buddysmom
Both my quakers dunk almost everything. My canary wings even dunk their parrot bread and make an awful mess!
herbiesmom
Herbie is definitely a dunker! No matter what it is, it needs to go in his bird bath/soup bowl! Then he shakes his head and bits of soggy food goes all over. rolleyes.gif Punkin dunks occasionally. We change water a few times a day but there is always new food at the bottom of the bowl. Oh well, that's life with Little Green Chickens! wub.gif
jobo2mi
It's known as Parrot Soup!!! LOLOL
Dany22
Good to know Nicky isn't just a freak! He's always been a dunker, and it's always cracked me up! I just thought he was silly!
Jen_and_spiggy
Yip everything goes in his dish pellets toys veggies and bird lol .
Quakerlove
Yup, I have a dunker here too. Everything must be dunk prior to eating. lol
cdennis77521
Well that is certainly something to look forward to. Mater has yet to start doing that, I'm just now getting him used to takeing a bath...
Yogi's_mom
I used to think it was so cute that some of the quakers here were dunkers. Then Yogi started doing it a few months ago lol.

Frankie is a dunker and has been since I brought him home. EVERYTHING goes in his dish wacko.gif

I gave up on Frankie ever having a clean water dish, and put another one in the cage. He drinks out of that one, and doesn't put anything in it. Go figure.

Yogi doesn't dunk and eat though. I watched him one night, and after he was done having a drink and his dinner, he carted a couple of pellets over to the water dish and plopped em in. I thought he was going to eat them, but nope.. he headed off to have a nap instead.

I waited a bit, then dumped the water out. When I put the bowl in, he headed over and had a drink.

They really are weird little birds aren't they laugh.gif
moonchild1970
Verde is a hardcore dunker. tongue.gif Now he has all the Lovebirds doing it too!

Murphy is a dunker too. He only dunks "dry food" such as bread or pretezels or anything that will get really gross if left in water for the day. Too funny that they have a tendency to do this.

I guess everything goes better with water!! tongue.gif

Hi ya, I am new to this site and this is my 1st posting, my boy (or we shall find out on wednesday through DNA sexing) I really hope he is a boy as he says 'good boy' anyway back to the subject, Luigi (Wiji for short another reason I hope he is a boy) dunks food I think it is to soften it, but never really found out the real reason, however what he has a major thing with is toilet paper, he will get hold of one or two sheets toilet paper (no getting it back off him as he takes off like a rocket with it) heads straight to his cage or play area water dishes and dunks it in the water then takes it back out and sucks on it till he has sucked out all the water and drops it to one side or back in the water to re wet it for another sucking.... very strange, my hubby thinks it is him being lazy so he doesnt have to bend down and scoop up water over and over again, I am not too sure of this. He is busy sleeping on my knee at the moment while i am typing away, he is all puffed out and his head is tucked under his beak.... Oh he is so cute... I just want to grab him and squeeze him till he pops he is so sweet. (please dont call animal cruelty society, i could never hurt him,) he is perfect even when he has his little bite attack days (4 times in 1 year) hormones i think. anyway sorry i have completely drifted of the subject, if you want to see him playing basketball and ten pin bowling, please check him out here http://www.belindaspage.co.uk/luigi.html
Ok now i am rambling on... thanks for this forum and i hope to be of help to some people maybe, and hopefully get some help should i desperately need it. thanks
