I haven't been on the forum for a long time, but I know all of you will be able to relate to what an absolute miracle I've just experienced!
To set the stage: I have an almost 3 year old green boy, named Kirby, and was active on the forum when he was new to us. After a while, I felt no longer new enough to benefit from the basic questions nor experienced enough to offer help, so I just lurked from time to time. Always, I appreciated the enormous knowledge, experience and just plain friendiness of this forum!
So, fast forward to today: I was not consciously thinking of adding another Quaker to our flock, but was occasionally checking out the "needs rehomed" posts to see if I could help out in my area. And whenever I'd go to craigslist, I checked the pet section for birds in need. And there she was! The ad read: Young blue quaker, tame, friendly, comes with her two large cages, toys and all food - $100. I set a speed record shooting off an email, all the while thinking that was too good to be true, or must be a scam.
Within minutes, I got a call from the nicest young man who told me his story: he is in the Navy and has been deployed, his dad is also career military and got his orders, leaving his mom home alone to care for a special needs teenage son and no time to spend with a bird he knows needs lots of interaction. The bird, who was only 6 months old, is wonderful and we just want to assure a good home for her.
Within the hour, I was on my way, still not really knowing what to expect. And - lo and behold - met Skye, the most gorgeous, friendly, healthy, DNA'd and vet checked blue female.
So, here she is with Kirby, at their first meeting after quarantine, and a few hours later, all cozily mutually preening (a good sign, right???). Enjoy the pictures - and vicariously, my absolute joy at her being sent to us!!!

Awww!

I'm so sorry for the poor military guy, who must have hated to part with her and is going off into harm's way, God bless him (and his father), but I'm sure knowing his birdy is in good and loving hands helps. And YOU are a lucky duck!

She's gorgeous and Kirby seems tickled with his new playmate. Or maybe he's tickling her.

I agree - I thanked him and his mom for their service to our country and personal sacrifice on behalf of all of us. Here he is deployed, and so sincerely trying to place the bird so his mom won't be left with that responsibility.... the entire encounter was a blessing to me!

SOO, you are living my dream! I search and never find anything like that to adopt.
Are the birds together all the time? Can you pet them now that there are two?
Are they friendly to people now that there are two?
Or will the be more for each other?
i am desperate to know how to get another bird to fit in and still have them like pets!
Dogs and horses I understand, birds, I am learning and would like to have another but am afraid to make it into a screaming non person bird avairy instead of a bird loving, bird enjoying people and vice versa family.

What a precious baby, so beautiful and it's so great that Kirby is being so nice to accept her.
I too, feel so bad for the poor guy that had to give her up. That is so hard for most people to do after getting so attached (which only takes 30 seconds....or less)
God bless that young man and his family.

Thanks for your good wishes - and remembering the sacrifices of all our service men & women, including leaving behind family AND cherished pets. I'm so blessed to not only find my dream birdie, but by the circumstances!
Lori, I've sent you a private message about the challenges of our 2-quaker household. The subject of whether to add another bird gets lots of attention on the forum. Quickly, I'll say we cage our birds separately, but allow supervised play time, and both are bonded to us. But every day is an adventure, with both birds needing both care and attention. The decision to add another bird is one that should be made with a lot of thought and preparation, and there's lots of posts on the forum to help in that process!
