Hi there

I've joined for a few weeks now and already learned a huge amount from this website and forum, and fellow Irishman rory123 in particular has been very helpful indeed.

It was a bit late in the season to find a new hand-reared quaker but I found a 16-week old yesterday who was very friendly in the shop.

The only thing is he thinks biting everything is fun. Including me. But it's not nasty, he's a sweetheart, and today he was snuggling in on my neck. Day 2, and he's happiest sitting on the "lip" of the open cage door, watching me.

Love the engineer in him - as I was attaching things to the cage, he knew exactly how to detach them, pull the wires apart. I'm calling him a "he" coz the aviary man thought he was, his broad shoulders he said, but I might as well go with it, even though it's probably not true. So I thought for a name, Brunel, like the engineer, and then I thought Brunello, like the wine from the area in Italy I lived for a year. Then I gave him some pasta and he loved it. So, here's Brunello!

Hello welcome to the forum Brunello. I've always wanted to go to Ireland. (I'm half Irish) Maybe your baby will talk with an Irish accent that would be so cute.

Welcome to the forum. I love the name Brunello! Wish I could see Dublin. Some of my ancestors hailed from there.
I know you will enjoy it here. More pictures and some good Brunello stories would be nice.

Thanks folks!

Well, as I hoped, day 3 now, he's settling in, he's stepping up happily and loves sitting on my shoulder. I figured the best way to stop him biting was to distract him, the moment I think he's about to - then he sort of forgets about it. It's worked really well. I'm working on allowing me to stroke him/hold him - that may take some time.

What a cool bird.

He's much quieter than I thought - only about one loud "cheep" per day! Although I suspect, having read all about quakers, I may be just enjoying the silence before the storm!

He came with his wings clipped. Am I the only one to find it sad when a bird aims to fly somewhere, like high on a human being's shoulder, and misses pathetically because he doesn't have enough lifting power? I keep on having to reach down and get him to step up on my finger from the floor, after he's tried to fly up somewhere. He doesn't like being on the ground at all, in his cage or outside.
