Hi,
Somebody just told me that they read somewhere that a bird that is near a high definition tv set all the time can actually cause death to the bird? Has anyone heard anything that would support this ?
Jeepingchick
never have heard of that , what was this persons reasoning on it??
Maddy
That was all my sister told me was that she read somewhere that a hdtv and a domestic bird being in the same room can cause death to the bird. I just lost my bird in which he was in a room with a tv...in which I often would turn on the animal planet for him to watch and he really seemed to enjoy it. My parrot was 9 years old, he just died, and I'm still very devastating over it, and looking to figure out what could of happened for him to be sick enough to die. I am shocked by the whole thing! I searched online to try to find something that would support that , but cannot find anything.

My birds have been around a 42" HD LCD tv for years with no ill effects. IMO I cannot see how it could possibly cause death.

And so has my birdie Katie===I haven't heard this---just don't know, but anyway Harley has been around ours for like 5 years....

i honestly dont see how it could effect the bird with out having effects on you ove rthe long term as well.its really sad and im sorry to hear you lost your bird but dont be to hard on yourself i dont think the tv was at fault

I don't think that the tv was at fault either. I don't know why my bird died, I have been online since though looking for something that would give me an answer, and I have to stop and just accept it. I have his cage here in my living room and I'm just not sure if I should get another quaker, or just put the cage down in the cellar . My heart feels so broken. I would put him outside on all nice days on the deck ...and he loved being out there. A week before he died, I checked the weather, saw no storms coming, and I went out for a bike ride. I left Pete out, the day was beautiful. But, while riding my bike, my worst nightmare happened in which a dog on a lawn with his owner across the road as I was passing by took off to chase me, and he jumped into the road in front of a truck. The poor guy got hit , and it was bad. I stopped my bike and ran to stop the traffic so the dog wouldn't get hit again. Others stopped to help as well, but the guy who hit the dog appeared to keep on going. As I was helping to pick up the dog to move into a truck so he could be taken to the vets, we were using towels that a passerby had in her car to pick the poor dog up with, the man who hit the dog had returned, and he was an absolute idiot, screaming about his broken light on his truck. He verbally attacked me, in which , I couldn't understand why. But, the police were called to the scene, and anyway, I couldn't leave the scene, and the police took about 45 minutes getting there, and a big thunderstorm came through. with very hard rains for about 1/2 hour. I was soaked, as I was on my bike, and when I got home, Pete was left out in that thunderstorm. I brought him in and all his food dishes were soaked, along with him. He seemed , after that, to be depressed. But, not enough for me to realize he was sick.

I wish I would of paid more attention.

I googled couldn`t find anything that said it would harm a bird ..I think if it was harmful to a bird or pet it would also be for humans....
Don`t Blame yourself , and don`t give up on another bird just wait till you feel the time is right ..(HUGS coming from across the miles..)

Thanks for the hugs. I at first felt I would never have another bird.....for the first few hours anyway.....but , reality is, I so miss my Pete Bird, and I have a good situation for a bird. I have a small dog, who is freindly to everything. And I have 9 wandering grey squirrels that I raised from pinkie's that are free and that's it. And the quaker is a great bird because I heat with wood....and this breed of bird does well with having the temperature of the house not being always the same. When I first got Pete, 9 years ago, I thought that being near windows and the door wasn't good for him , but as I moved his cage and him around the house, I realised that he really liked being near the windows to see outside, and seeing the light of the day. The temperature's of the living room didn't phase him at all. Soon, he became my doorbell, and his voculizations were different enough so that I knew when it was the UPS guy, or my husband, or my son arriving, or someone different. I work in a home studio on the second floor, so this was so very helpful that he would let me know all the time who it was and whether or not I need to run down the stairs. I always loved hearing him.....some people get tired of their birds chattering or screaming.....I never tired of him . One time , he was on the deck, and he managed to open up his cage, and he left. He flew away. When I discovered he was gone, I started searching and calling for him. I put on Phantom of the opera to call him back, as he loved the cd. But he didn't return and it got dark. I was devastated. I searched the next day, no sight of him. So I put together his photo, and a plea for his safe return and brought it to the local paper. Meanwhile, the same night Pete came up missing, a neighbor guy 1/2 mile from my house was getting out of his pool and this beautiful green bird landed on his fence and started squawking. He looked at the bird, and realised it wasn't a wild one and so when he went up and held out his hand, Pete jumped right up on his finger ....and Pete knew it was time for birds like him to be inside. So Pete ended up in a rabbit cage for the night! The guy the next morning, he called the local am radio station to have it announced on the morning program that a bird was found. Then he went to Wal Mart to find bird food for his lost friend....my Pete. He asked in the pet section of wal mart about what to feed a bird that he knew nothing about.... A woman who was helping him wasn't sure, but she said that there was a woman in the sporting section that would know. This woman came and the man described his new wayward bird's describtion to her. She knew, almost immediently, that it was a quaker. This woman had over 100 birds that were caged in her house, she knew her birds, and she didn't have a quaker. She told the man that the bird he was describing was a quaker, and that bird was an illegal bird for this state. She then told him that she would come and take the bird, as she was "certified" to care for all birds. The man agreed to let her take the bird. She was estactic, she went to his house, she saw the quaker and she left with my Pete. She said to me later that she felt like she had really "scored"! ...
Another woman, who was doing my ad for the local paper, was also listening to the local am radio station as she was doing the add. So she heard a found bird on this road, and a lost bird on this road. She called me up. She told me the man's name and I was estactic. Just a few houses down and that's where my Pete is....I called the man, he asked me to describe the bird, I did, and he said...Yup...that's the bird! But then he said, "but, I gave him away last night!".......When I asked where the bird is now...he couldn't tell me. He said all he knew was the woman worked at Wal Mart. He didn't have a name, or address, or anything.
So I called Wal Mart. I said, "there is a woman who works there and I don't know her name, who came to my town last night and took a bird home thinking he was a stray , but he's not..he's my bird and I need to have him back!".... I thought for sure that the person would say to me that they can not help me without a name of the person I need to talk to, but instead they said....
"hold on, there's only one person here that it could of been"......and the next thing I knew , I was on the phone with the person who had my Pete. I explained to her what had happened.....and she went through her little "I know more about birds than you do...and your not a good pet owner because you allowed your bird to get lost "...ordeal. She clearly didn't want to give me back My Pete. I finally had to say..."listen, I need your address, I am coming now to pick up MY bird", and she relented and gave me her address. When I arrived, I walked into her house , and as soon as Pete heard my voice , he started squawking. It was easy to find him, in her dining room, due to his sqawking, but there was so many different kinds of birds in her house. I looked around, and I couldn't even beleive it. I said, oh god, you have so many birds! Her husband said, "this is nothing, you should see the other rooms"! Bird cages on top of bird cages......truely more than any one person should handle. Birds shouldn't live like that. They can't be free, the house was too dark, Pete wouldn't of ever been happy there. I'm sure she loved birds, and felt that this was a safe and great environment for them, but I saw it as abusive. So as much as I am mourning my Pete right now, I also know that I have a good home here for a bird. They like to have somebody around more than not, they are very social, and I can provide that. So .... I'm looking around. I'm sure that I'll have another quaker at some point. When the time is right....
