So I was at my second job today, I work at an all bird clinic, and I was petting this sulfur crested cockatoo and kissing him on his beak and head. His name is Caliph...pronounced(KA-LEEF). And he is boarding there because his owner is out of town. I really feel like this sweetheart trusts me because when I first met him...one of the other girls was trying to weigh him and trying to get him to step on the scale and he kept flying all around the room and flying away from her. When I went to try and weigh him, I just talked to him softly and scritched his neck and pet him and he stepped right up for me and stepped right on the scale. He never gives me any problems and he is so sweet and mild tempered. Whenever he wants to be scritched, he will lift his claw and open and close it and then start scritching his own neck...showing you what he wants you to do. I really feel like I have connected with him. I was talking to the doctor about him and telling her how much I like him and she told me that he needed a home. I asked her why and she told me that her owner called up a few weeks ago and was crying histerically because her and her husband are moving to North Carolina and her husband said that Caliph cant come. She has had him for 30 years. She raised him. They are moving in a few weeks and he wont even let her take him with them and try to find him a good home in North Carolina. I can not possibly take Caliph because I had to move back in with my mother when me and my ex broke up and she almost didnt let me bring Monkey. I would have lived in a box on the sidewalk before I would have given him up. I want to tell the lady that she should leave her husband if he wont let her keep Caliph because obviously he doesnt care about her if he is going to make her give up her baby that she has raised for 30 years and makes her so happy! But I cant say that to her because she is a patient and I work there. I am so afraid of what will happen to this gentle soul if she doesnt find him a home. Would anyone of you want to help take in this poor thing? I live in south Florida but I would pretty much be willing to drive him anywhere within 12 hours and I will also pay to ship him although I would prefer to drive him but if I have to I will ship him because I dont want to see anything happen to him. He is such a sweet guy and he doesnt scream alot...if he starts its only because you have walked away and he wants you to pet him and if you just shut the door for a few minutes, he stops. Please someone help him..and if you cant then if you have any ideas I would love to hear them. He doesnt have much time. And I really dont think the husband is going to budge. I cried all the way home from work and continued when I got home. To top it off. The doctor had to euthanize a cockatiel today also. I was crying so much when I got home, Monkey was even trying to cheer me up:( Please let me know if you are willing to help...and I am going to take pics on Saturday when I go back to work. Sorry this is so long....

I feel for bad for this poor lady. You're right, her husband is an @ss! I can't imagine what she is going through and I hope that he will reconsider, after 30 years how can he be so cruel?

Whatta jerk!!! That'd be the day, i EVER let someone tell me to get rid of my birds!! That poor woman!!! I feel for you, b/c I am a very, VERY outspoken individual, and it would be almost IMPOSSIBLE for me to keep my mouth shut to the lady! But your in a tough situation, i understand....I would put fliers up, craig's list, pet stores, etc. Seeing where you work, you might get lucky. Its a shame you can't take it in...that poor bird is going to be heart broken!! 30yrs, i couldn't imagine!! I do wish you the best of luck...If i happen to hear anyone talking of a bird, ill let you know! Problem is, i live in good ole west virginia! Plz keep us posted! there's also a link on this forum for ppl rehoming animals and what not! I'd put it there as well!!!
Good luck anna!

That is so sad , I hoppe the owner is still trying to convince that prick of a husband to let the bird go with them , can you imagine the heart break for both fid and owner 30years and then tossed out to who knows what....
I would definatley NOT leave my Bird she should give he husband an altimatum we both go (the bird and me ) or neither of us go.....

No kidding on that pond scum of a husband. He won't "let" her take the bird? I'd tell him nobody "lets" me do or not do a thing and he could take a flying leap. Only my language would be a lot saltier than that. I wish I were closer to you! Hubby'd love to have a cockatoo though I don't know where we'd put any more critters.

LOL I imagine there are quite a few people on here who would be more than happy to tell her to leave her husband. Goodness, that makes me mad! There is absolutely no way....nope, I just couldn't leave my bird after 30 years!
I'm so sorry, Anna! I really hope either a) her husband comes to his senses and "lets" her keep her baby or

you're able to help that poor woman find a wonderful home for her baby.

How can a woman stay with her husband after she has to give up her beloved bird? What kind of marriage can they possibly have afterwards? My guess is that the marriage is over already, the wife just hasn't realized it yet.
Maybe the bird can stay at the clinic just a while longer? The wife will soon know that there is no marriage...and then she'll want her bird back.

That is so AWFULL... I live in South East Texas... I wished I could meet you to get the baby, I'd get it an take it too my sister, she would love to adopt it into her family.
I left my husband over my dog one time.. He said it was either him or my dog and I chose the dog!! LOL The dog was better company at the time LOL....
Dang I wished knew what to say.. or do for you...
How hard is it too ship a baby like that? Because I know for a fact my sister would take him in a heart beat.. And She will be here in Houston on the 19th of September.. Let me know the info and in the mean time I will check with my sister..But I am more than sure she will take him!!!
Like i said pm me and let me know what the info is on shipping them I have never dealt with shipping animals before!!!
I'll could take him until my sister can get him in 3 weeks if not sooner.
But let me know, I know it is stressful on them, or do they over night them How does this work?

oh no this is horrible, I'd take him in if I lived closer except I'm pretty sure we don't import animals like that to Australia anymore and I'm sure the shipping would cost a bundle >> but my fiancee's father would love another sweetie of a bird because he had a Galah but he passed away a good few months ago due to a tumor so a sweetheart of a bird like that would make his day T_T **** those oceans keeping us apart...

I am not so sure howit works but I am definitely going to find out. I know people on here have had birds shipped to them. Maybe someone can tell me how it works and about how much it costs? Thank you so much for asking your sister. I am going to call the lady when she gets off of vacation and tell her that I have a few people interested in taking Caliph. I really trust the people on this site and would rather he go to someone on here rather than some joe shmoe off the streets that was on craigslist or the newspaper. I am going to take photos ofhim tomorrow morning (saturday), and I will post them tomorrow evening. Thank you again so much for responding and I will email you when she gets home from vacation:)

I am not too sure but I am most definitely going to find out for you. Like I said, she is on vacation and as soon as she comes back I am going to call her and find out all the details and see if I can help her. Are you interested in taking in another bird? He is sooo sweet really. He is full flighted and I dont really like that. I have Monkey's one wing clipped because if he ever got away from me I would be devestated. But I guess it is up to the owner but I would definitely want to clip one of his wings because he is a good flier. He has the sweetest face. I am going to post some pics on here tomorrow evening of him. I am going to take them after I go into work tomorrow morning. I feel so bad for him because he spends sooo much time boarding at the clinic. I try and spend extra time with him and I let him out in the room he boards in so he can walk around and fly around if he wants. I cant wait to talk to the owner. Thank you so much for your response. All we need now is for her to come back from vacation!

Thank you all so much for your support and your responses. I am going to be posting pics on here tomorrow evening after I get off of work. I felt so bad for Caliph because he was the only one boarding in the large bird room. Then I stopped in the other day to see him on my day off and I walked in and there were 3 other cockatoos in there! Two goffins and an umbrella cockatoo were in there with him. As well as an african grey and a dove...lol. Looks like he has some company for now anyways. It is going to be a busy day tomorrow cleaning all those cages as well as weighing and feeding and watering them. Then I have to do the small to medium size bird room which is currently housing two more african greys, a sun conure, a senegal, a budgie and a cockatiel! Busy, busy. But I absoutely love it and the only reason why I work two jobs and have no days off is because this oppurtunity opened up for me and I couldnt pass it up due to my love of parrots. It is pretty fun too. Last week I walked n the door and Alex, one of the greys said "goodmornig". When I went to leave a few hours later, he said...."see you later now!"..lol. I also was holding up an almond to him and I kept asking him if he wanted a peanut over and over because he says it so cute. He was being stubborn and wouldnt say it though so I just gave it to him and turned to walk away. Then he screamed at me.."Go ring your bell!" I almost died laughing:) I love my job. Thank you again everyone for your support...it means alot:)

It is not recommended to clip only one wing , it puts the fid off balance and could cause them to hurt themselves , I would recommend if you clip clip BOTH wings the same...not too hard as to cause them no flight at all but enough to enable them to glide to the floor without harm...

Thank you, I never thought that you could clip both wings and they were able to glide that is why I have been clipping only one of his wings. I think I will clip both next time. He does seem to be overly clumsy...maybe that is why...lol:)

My TAG had one wing clipped when I got her and she has been a BIG klutz. I'm still waiting for her wing feathers to get more even.
Just remember only clip what you have to. I clip only a couple from each wing at a time to make sure they can still glide.

yano, if all else fails, you could talk to your boss and see if the bird could live at the clinic. not ideal by any stretch, but better than the unknown. you could bring him home on weekends? that way he would still be with you and it wouldn't be as traumatic for him, and you wouldn't need to find a permanent spot for him in your mom's house. then when you get on your feet, you can move him in

the clinic i used to go to in town here has a 'too named fred who lives in their waiting room. i'm not sure what the specifics are as far as weekends, etc, but yeah, he's got a nice big cage in the waiting room and says hi to you when you walk by.
good luck! and i'm with the others - there's no way ian would or could tell me, "hey, we are moving and the birds aren't coming with" cuz i'd be like, "good luck with YOUR move" and i've only had my babies 2 years or less. that would surely be the day...

Here are the pics as promised...the reason why he doesnt have any feathers on his left cheek is because he has rubbed them all off with his foot. He likes to rub his cheek with his foot when he is being petted and now he has no feathers on his left cheek...they will never grow back either. In the pics it looks like he has a hole in his cheek where that dark spot is on his cheek. It is not a hole, just a dark spot on his cheek where the skin is a little darker in that area. Let me know what you think! The whole time I was taking these pics he was screaming "Hey Baby!"...lol

Wow - that's horrible. I'm afraid the husband would go instead of the bird. That's a really long time and the seperation could be quite traumatic for both parties. The sad thing is there are people who think pets are disposable & it sounds like that is her husband's mind-set. It is also sad that this client is too afraid to put her foot down on this. I'd give the guy an ultimatum - its an all or none deal. I was that way when my husband moved in with me. He had issues with cats and I had cats & refused to part with them for him. He found a way to make it work. I would really love to have a discussion with this jerk.

All I can say is that lady's husband is showing her just how little he cares for her, AND, what is wrong with a woman who allows her life to "belong" to her husband. I'll bet if
HE wanted the bird and she didn't, he would keep the bird.
I feel very sorry for a woman who will "LET" her husband tell her what he will "LET" her do.
Where is this woman's spine?
NO WAY would any man tell me I couldn't keep a bird I raised and loved for 30 years!!!!! That sorry @$$ would have to go.
Poor bird. I love my birds so much that no one will ever tell me I can't take mine wherever I go. That situation would make any true bird lover cry! Bless you for trying to help this poor little featherbutt.
That sure ruffles MY feathers. My prayer is that whatever happens, the bird winds up happy and healthy. and that whoever provides that for him is well blessed.

I know one thing my husband and I came to a quick understanding, he collects coins and I collect animals LOL
he told me the other day I couldn't have no more animals, and that I might have to get rid of some I told him that if that is the case then he has to START SELLING HIS COIN COLLECTION,,, he tells me thats not going to happen, I said well atleast my FIDS and other babies will keep me company when I don't feel good, wth does your coins do? sit in the safe cause you can't play with them!! So guess im not getting rid of my babies, and I will get more if i want to LOL
But, its enough to make you mad on a situation like this!!!
