Last night, I saw an ad on Craigslist for several rats, a fish and a parakeet that need new homes "If they are not sold by September 2nd they will be pet food." Well, I couldn't let that happen and took the ad seriously and thank goodness I did, because when I met these people this evening they literally shoved the bird cage out the door and I brought it to my car to get Sammy out and into the carrier I brought (they wouldn't let me inside the home). I paid $20 for Sammy, his perches and toys (filthy disgusting!) a cage cover, and a book. I like the book, it and Sammy are worth the $20.

Sammy is not tame, but with some time I'm sure he will come around. In the car, he flew all over and I finally caught him and he was biting me as hard as he could, which didn't really hurt. When I got him home the first thing I wanted to do was clip his wings, but after I chased him around our guest room for quite awhile and finally catching him, I decided that he was WAY too stressed, and put him in his cage, I'll leave him be tonight, let him get used to his new room.

His beak seems to be a bit dark, is that normal? Just to be sure, I looked at Arnie's beak and it's bright yellow. Sammy's is a sort of olive green color.

He's a cutie, here's a pic:

Wow, some people. mad.gif Sammy is very lucky you went and got him, poor baby. He looks like he's in pretty good shape considering what he must have endured. As for his beak, I think parakeet beaks probably get a bit darker with age. It doesn't look that bad and maybe it's really due to his dirty cage. Did you give him a cuttle bone? He'll soon polish it up. Give him a few days to settle in and he'll be chirping his little head off, I'll bet. He'll figure out his whole life has improved! Parakeets are very smart little stinkers! I just adore mine, and they're not EVEN tame. laugh.gif But they're so much fun to have around.

Congrats on the new baby..
He is such a pretty lil thing...

He is so cute, and noisy!! He can hear the other birds in the living room, dining room and family room and he loves chirping to them...smile.gif

I'm not really planning on him being a pet, but I got him out of a bad situation and am going to teach him to step up and then find him his forever home. We really don't need five birds! smile.gif If I end up falling in love with him then that will be different, he'll stay here. LOL

Congrats to you and also to Sammy. Thank you for being his birdie angel! If you hadn't gotten him he probably would have ended up on the curb waiting for garbage pickup or something. He is one lucky birdie.

He's getting more comfortable with me, that's for sure. I haven't clipped him yet, but I was just relaxing in the guest bedroom next to his cage, laying on the bed with my eyes closed and heard him jump down and I opened my eyes a bit and he was sitting on his food dish, munching away and looking at me. smile.gif

He's been flock calling to my other birds a lot today. smile.gif

OMG! I was just given a little blue parakeet-looks just like yours and his name is Sammy also!!! He is bird #7 for me so I've closed the gates.

My Sammy is 6 years old, was a classroom bird his entire life. He is adorable, doesn't bite at all but still doesn't like to be held. His little beak gapes open so I believe it stresses him.

If you haven't tried it yet get your Sammy some of those little plastic balls, they are usually strung end to end and you may have to clip them apart. My Sammy LOVES his balls, carries them around all day-lifts them in the air, mates on them, puts them in his water bowl, then his seed bowl. He flips around and around his perches and hangs like a bat. I am so blessed to have him.

Good luck with your Sammy!!!!!Bren

LOL Our Sammys are twins! Your Sammy sounds like a character, how cute! Thanks for the heads up on the balls! smile.gif I don't know how old my Sammy is, the girl I bought him from said he's about a year and a half old. Thanks for the pic! Hmm, maybe Sammy's beak color is normal...your Sammy's looks just like his.
