Full Version: Hello From Florida
Quaker Parrot Forum > Welcome! > Introductions

Hi there all, I have been lurking and reading for over a week and a half now and already have found alot of advice and info.
I am 42, and live in Largo Florida. Been here a year and a half now (moved from Pa) and I have learned I HATE the heat and humidity but hubby loves it here...and I do LOVE the beaches and wildlife, and I don't miss scraping ice off my windshield at 5:00am. LOL.
I am getting my first bird this weekend or next (Quaker of course). I am quiting smoking and he/she is my reward/bribe to myself!
We have a dog Heidi (Doberman) and two cats Harvey (black stray hubby adopted) and Mojo (Brown rosetted Bengal). I work in a pet store so that helps to keeps all my furkids spoiled....I think I work just for treats and toys and it's about to get worse! LOL.
Anyhow, wanted to say Hi and introduce myself.

Hi, Susan!
Welcome to the forum! Sounds like you have quite the furry family! I love dobermans & love the name Heidi! I'm Jess. Hubby & I have 5 feathered kids! Two macaws, two cockatoos & last but by no means least a Quaker who thinks he is as big or bigger than the other birds in the house! lol We had cats when I was growing up but when I lost my Siamese I never got another cat. With our last move hubby and I decided to wait on getting another dog. We want a bigger yard for him to exercise in as well as a bit bigger house!

Congratulations on your choice of a Quaker! They are wonderful birds! Just be careful they are addictive! I don't think you can have just one! lol I have 5 and would add more if I could but 5 flying feathers in one no-so-big house is my limit for now! lol Yes, I am a bird addict and I admit it! lol Thank goodness hubby loves me and my birds (squawking & all!)!

Hi! I live in Florida too. I'm in Holiday about 45 minutes north of you by Tarpon Springs. Are you getting your quaker at the pet store you work at? Or from a breeder? I know of a great place to get hand fed quakers.
The humidity down here does take some getting used to. It usually starts cooling down around mid October so it should not be much longer.

Welcome Susan---and congratulations on getting your new baby, a quaker of course...he will certainly be a lot of fun to have, just start him off right and I'm sure you will...
And you work in a pet store, oh my--look out ---- toys galore for the new baby.... laugh.gif and why not---I would do the same...I bet you enjoy that job...

Looking forward to hearing of your quaker when he/she gets settled in it's new home.... smile.gif

Bird addict! LOL.
I hope to start him off right, that's how I found this place, trying to do my research ahead of time.

I never had a Doberman before, I always had GSD's but this Doberman is a big baby and such a sweetheart.

They don't have any Quakers where I work so I will be getting him from a breeder. Any recommendation on a good breeder would be appreciated. I have it naarrowed down to two but can add another!

Thanks for the welcome!

There is a bird store at Oldsmar flea market called everything birds. They breed their quakers themselves. They are handfed babies. I'm not sure if they have any left. Their phone is (813) 294-0251 if you want to call and see if they have any left. They are only $39.99.
They are very sweet- 4 of my friends have gotten babies from them. If you call, make sure you ask about the Oldsmar store- that is the store closest to you. They have another store in Tampa at Big Top Flea market.

I know a couple of breeders but I don't think either of them breed quakers right now. I do know of a wonderful breeder not too far from you. Her web site isn't coming up for some reason right now though. I'll find her phone number and pm it to you.

The one breeder I am considering is the Oldsmar place. Hubby and I went last Saturday and saw the babies. I wanted to see a variety of different birds...and she does have that! The Quaker babies were so cute!

Thanks all for the welcome. I can't wait to get my Quaker. I didn't get him/her this weekend...I am sick so decided to wait until I am healthy...so hopefully this week-end. Then you all will probably get tired of all my questions!

Ahh, I hope you feel better. Maybe you'll feel well enough tomorrow to go pick one up.
