Well I have been wanting another birdie-- have been having a hard time deciding what type of birdie, I really wanted a cockatiel but decided that with my husband and my youngest having allergies, a cockatiel might not be the best idea. I thought about a lovebird, a meyers, pionus, or a senegal. BUT I ran across a birdie that looks like a miniature QUAKER-- a little green pacific Parrotlet!! He is sooo cute. We named him Kirby. While he is so tiny and innocent looking, he surely can bite HARD!!!! I have had Gabby since April and she has NEVER! made me bleed-- I had Kirby for 3 hours and I have a few pieces of skin missing-- boy oh boy!! He is a baby about 8 weeks old or so and was handfed. He is probably just scared but I hope he doesn't bite all the time-- I don't have baby soft skin because I do dishes and yard work all the time so he really bites hard.

He looks so much like a miniature Gabby-- He is sleeping in his birdie tent right now. I will take pictures tomorrow ( my daughter borrowed my camera) --

Congratulations! Von will be able to tell you ALL about parrotlets, she breeds them. They are basically little Amazons. They can be nippy, and generally are not afraid of ANYTHING, so be careful. smile.gif Make sure to handle it every day to calm some of that nippy attitude. They can be SO sweet, too, though! And they're about as loud as a budgie, which is nice!

Have fun with your new baby!

yeah! Congrats of the P'let. I have 2, and love them to bits and pieces. When I first got my male, he would bite the heck out of me. The secret with him was to continue being his master...otherwise he will try to run the show. I learned to gently hold him in my palm and gently grasp his beak with my index and thumb fingers in such a way that he could not complete a bite (or fully close his beak). Once he calmed down, he would give up and I was sure to give him scratchies. You can always push into the bite if he gets you by surprise...that sets him off ballence and they get the idea that a bite isnt going to get his way.

You should give him a week on his own where you just chat to him. Give him lots of treats (millet, popcorn). Once he trusts you to be near him, start the step up in a room where its just you and him...no distractions. They are smart and love a challenge so dont give up.

I finally got a female from the Humane Society and she was wild for sure, but has really calmed down and likes to take rides on my shoulder. I have a million holes in my "birdie" tee shirts from the P'lets nibbles. wink.gif
good luck with your new baby.

Ive kinda given up on my parrotlet. If he were my only bird I would prob spend more time. But he is fun to watch and he talks. He can bite really hard as well. Once you catch him he doesnt bite but he isnt interested in staying with you . Flys away as quick as he can get a chance. He did know step up at one time.

Plets are wonderful little guys. They have such personalites. They can be nippy, so patience is the key. My little man Hadji, is a nut job..he hates plastc bags and goes nuts when he hears the rattle. Enjoy this big parrot in a small body, I bet you'll be glad you added Kirby to the flock.
