Hello, Our family just got a 3 month old Quaker. we named her Pheobe, were calling her a girl. Our family is Dad, Mom, Aleyna 12 and Kaelyn 9. and now Pheobe 3 months. We are new bird owners, so this is so exciting for us. Pheobe has been really good. She doesnt bite but does nip sometimes, I believe she is just trying to figure out who is picking her up. We have had her since Sunday, so this is day 4. We purchased the largest cage we could find 30x18x18. Last night we went to the pet store and bought so many toys and treats. Pheobe doesnt seem to interested in all the toys yet, I hope thaats normal. I'm also wondering at 3 months is it normal for her to seem a little unsteady, like on our shoulder? Right now I have her in the living room with me on a cute little school play thing we bought to put on the table, so she can hang out with us in the living room. She did seem to like playing with the strings on it. We can't wait to teach her words. Are there any programs out there that can help? And how long should I wait to introduce her to a bath? Any tips on our new family member would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome!

What a sweet family you have.

The only thing I will comment on is the toys, my Max is 3 years old and still does not play with toys unless I am shaking them at him and playing also.
I have heard on here that alot of fids (feathered kids) don't play with their toys.

Quakers will talk if they here normal conversation. They will of course say things you want them to say with a little repetition, but they are very smart and talk pretty easily. Max says about 20 different words, and sings a song, and of course the ole wolf whistle biggrin.gif

There are very friendly people and experts on here that will answer any questions you have. And of course we all have our opinions smile.gif

You will like it here, and again Welcome biggrin.gif

She is a beauty! Congrats...I believe my Carly was unstable on shoulders for awhile also. I believe you can start baths right away, but other more experianced people will be on here soon to tell you! Congrats again and welcome!

Hi! This is a great place to learn all about quaker parrots! We too just got baby quakers about a month ago now. Ours were two and a half months and three months when we brought them home. The younger one had a really hard time walking for awhile, even used his wings alot to get around, but now walks just fine. He gets all over the place. Our older one sounds more like your Pheobe. He was a little unstable on his feet for a very short while. It didn't take long and he was all over and even jumping from place to place, doing acrobats and crazy stuff... LOL!

It did take both of them a little while to get interested in their toys, but now they love them. One of the ladies one here told me about a book called "Guide to the Quaker Parrot", this is a GREAT READ!!! I bought mine at Amazon, used for .01 plus 3.99 shipping...

Congratulations on the new addition to your family!

Welcome to the forum! smile.gif Congrats on your new baby!

Everything sounds normal with Pheobe! biggrin.gif Just take it slow in the beginning and let her get adjusted.. it can take a few weeks for them to settle in and get used to their new life. She's still a baby so she needs to be shown how to do some things.. show her how to play with the toys, eat with her, etc. they learn from watching a lot of the time but try to take things slowly. Try not to bombard her with attention now.. the best piece of advice I've ever recieved here in the beginning was only give the new baby as much attention now as you can for the next 20-30 years.. if you give her too much attention in the early stages it can lead to major overbonding and other issues in the future. wink.gif

She's a cutie! Welcome! smile.gif

Thanks Casey's Mom, That makes since. but it is hard not to play with her. She squawks when I leave the room sometimes. It is so cute. She is even realizing when the kids leave on the bus in the morning. She is quiet the entire time they are getting ready and when they leave it's as if she is saying hey come back, I wasnt done. lol Ive been getting her out while I have my coffe and setting her on the coffee table. Now she likes to walk over my labtop and climb up me. She is so sweet. I definately have the fever now. lol. Now I'm wondering if i want to add another maybe a blue Quaker or a sun Conure. Do you recommend waiting awhile to get pheobe comfortable and i have read if you want them to be friendly pets to us we should have seperate cages. how do you feel? I do have the room for another cage. And my husband is thinking it might be good for her also. But we have not Dna sexed her yet. Also do birds need shots or anything, should I be taking her for a vet checkup? Sorry about the long reply. I havnt gotten much done around the house, Ive been reading about Quakers everyday and spoiling her. smile.gif
