Full Version: Initial Emergency Cage For Romeo

Here's what I'm picking up tomorrow morning... The interior dimensions are 23.5 x 17 x 30, the bar spacing is 5/8 and it was the "starter" cage for their Senegal when he came home. What I was thinking was Romeo could make do with this one until I can find/afford a bigger one for the main room and then this one could be moved downstairs into my work area so he could come down with me if he chose to. The young lady who listed it is being an absolute doll and giving it to me for $200.00. I figured I could add a bunch of exterior perches and hang a play gym directly above it to extend his territory once he gets comfortable exploring outside of the cage.

Does anyone have any experience with the parrot lock on the door? I've been warned that Romeo is a bit of a mechanical genius however the cage he's in has a basic bar over ball clip he can reach from the inside. They don't let him out much so he lets HIMSELF out, the little monkey. Apparently he just sleeps on top of his cage to prove the point, he doesn't actually GO anywhere.

(And OMG I figured out how to attach the picture... *whew*)

That's a nice cage and I think the size is fine for him. You can add a few outside perches and maybe a boing from the ceiling and he'll be in heaven! You're right he might figure out that lock, I've seen those and they aren't too complicated. If I can do it a smartie pants QP could do it! You can figure something out for that though.

That is the exact same cage I have for Ruffles. He is a big quaker and has plenty of room to move around in and loves his cage. As for the lock, he has never been able to open it from the inside. Now from the outside, is another story. Shrek his buddy will get on the outside of the cage and has figured out how to open the cage to let Ruffles out! He is so funny when he is doing this. He will work and work till he gets it just right then open the cage is. He is so proud of himself when he gets it open too. Good Luck!!!

Yay! Can you by any chance tell me who makes it? I've gotten it home and it turns out I forgot to ask for the bowls, it's missing one of the little circle things that keeps the food cup door closed, and there's a screw missing from the lock on the front door. I'm thinking I might be safer just seeing if I can get a replacement lock instead of trying to make something fit. The picture is obviously from when they first got it. *grumbles slightly* But it's still definately usable with a lot of cleaning and a little TLC.

It looks to be a HQ cage.

I've found that with most any cage if its used you probably aren't going to be able to buy new pieces. When cages are made out of the country and then imported into the US they can't easily be replaced.

I have some cages that are the same models but the dishes are not the same size and they came from the factory that way. As far as dishes go, you can buy the new ones that you can bolt directly to the feed doors. you might have to drill a couple holes but its much easier to do it that way than to try and search for the same dish.

As far as the bolts (screws) on the latch. Jst take on from the lock and take it to the hardware store and find one with the same thread and head design and use it. As long as its the same thread it will work fine and as long as it doesn't obstruct the latching mechanism it will do just as well.

I got a hold of the lady who sold me the cage and she's going to find the cups and run them into the city here for me. =) She forgot to check that they'd been put in the cage instead of back on her "cup" shelf after they were cleaned last. The part of the latch that's broken isn't the screw part... it's the latch itself so I've also sent a very nice email to the HQ people to see if I can sweet talk them into selling me a little bit of hardware. Couldn't hurt, right? =) Now to see what I have for spare supplies to set this baby up.

Sometimes starting with no budget is a good thing.... Until I see if he likes free-hanging stuff or stationary stuff I'm making him a pine shelf perch and then I'm braiding and weaving fleece strips to make him a natural-ish wall he can snuggle behind. Natural if you find chocolate and burgandy plaid fleece growing in some tropical corner of Brazil.... *wicked grin*

Thanks for all of the help so far!!! I couldn't have done it by myself.

It is a very nice bird cage and you can also buy and independent bird lock for him too.

it kind of looks like some sold at Petcetera too. I agree it's probably easier to just try and find your own fix it stuff. Home Depot has a good supply of birdie safe, stainless steel stuff but you really have to look for it.

To heck with the bird letting himself out.... those look like a darn good idea to deter the 2 year old from swinging the food doors open to get a better look at the bird!!! Thank you!

Hey, I was gonna suggest those cage locks too! I know the woman (and that bird!!) well. She was in my youngest daughter's wedding, and has hooked me up with a couple of my fids! biggrin.gif Those locks are very good. I've been over to her house and she has them on her cages, she ONLY has bout a dozen birds right now (counting the babies she's hand feeding!) so needs to be able to keep them in and separate. Mio is sooooo darn smart!

Update: It looks like I need to have this cage equiped and ready for next weekend. They're have the big talk with the grandparents and there have been some concerns expressed by family that Grandpa is starting to seem a little scattered. Cross your fingers for me! I've gone and gotten my heart set on rescuing this little guy.

So... Here is a picture of the hidey/roost I put together for him. It's zip strapped and woven with fleece right onto the cage bars so it's not going ANYWHERE regardless of how much of it he chews. The bottom is a piece of untreated fir plywood. I plan on keeping an eye on whether or not he tries to gnaw the plank and if he does I'll find something else. This is what I had in the basement. =)

And the lady I got the cage from was never able to find the cups that go with the cage, so here is my solution... is this viable? Dollar store stainless steel cups that are literally a HAIR too small and a little tiny bit of vet wrap to keep them from falling through. Now, from my dogs needing it I know vet wrap is chewable and non-toxic. Anything I'm missing using this small amount to keep the cups up? Tell me quick so I can get back to the dollar store and stock up if this is a good idea! biggrin.gif

I've been dealing with the WONDERFUL cage lock people for the last couple of days making sure the locks would fit and ironing out shipping to Canada and I will recommend them to ANYONE. They are amazing. And my locks are in the mail.

Thanks a bunch to everyone!

You are amazingly creative and imaginative, Andrea! I (for what it is worth!) think you are doing all the right things, and I hope Romeo comes to live with you SOON!
