Hi all, I am thinking of adopting "Charlie" a sweet Green Quaker" parrot that needs to find a new home, and wanted to check the forum for info and to see if anyone else had a similar setting to myself and hopefully confirm that this adoption will be harmonious for all concerned. My experience is limited to budgies and canines. Also, Charlie will need to share my attention with my 3 other dogs, as well as have a daily quiet time while I'm at work. If there is a way to make this work I am willing to do it. I would appreciate any and all advice! Thanks in advance. Donna.

Hi,

Welcome to the forum.

I don't know if this is advice or not, I'll just tell you my story.
I got Max when he was maybe 6 months old. He is now 3 yrs. old.
He was shy at first, of course, but I just let things unfold slowly. I let him move at his own pace.
He quickly warmed up to my husband and I.
We have 5 dogs, none of which bother Max if he flys to the floor. He picks at them more than they even pay attention to him. biggrin.gif He talks, he say lots of things, that part of the fun owning him, they pick up word fast.
They usually like alot of toys, and they rearrange them or just tear them up, buuuuut, Max does not like toys. He is content to just watch whatever is happening.

He does get his share of attention. He has screaming fits, but they all do. I let him out in the morning to walk any where on his cage he wants. Sometimes he flys to me for attention.

I do leave him alone during most days for different amounts of time. I just put him back in his cage, say I'll be back and go.

When I get home, I open his cage back up. At night I cover him, any where between 6:00 to 9:00. He lets me know with some screeching. I hear no more from him until I take off his covers.

Whenever the dogs are in, one or two at a time or all 4 of the inside dogs, I play with them and feed them, Max just watches. If they get around his cage he makes a growling noise. They just ignore him. But hes not jealous.

So I say get that little green baby, and you'll be glad you did. They do add a little more love in your life.

OH>>> He does not like kids. I know that is not true of all of them. There are people on here that have kids, and they all live together happy smile.gif

Hi Maxsmom - thank you for your inspiration! I find this site a bit confusing but hope this is correct and you will receive this reply. I've decided to go ahead with Charlie and should be picking him up tomorrow. I was just taking a break from preparations - you know cleaning the cage, placing the perches, that sort of thing. Thanks again for your help, much appreciated. I'm sure I'll be asking for more advice r-e-a-l soon, rolleyes.gif

Thank you all for the warm welcome! Charlie is now part of my family and Teddy my retriever, and Buddy & Desi my two chihuahuas, are all happy and respectful of one another. Everything is working well. Charlie is the sweetest bird! He is 9 months old and in the last few days has started to say "Kisses" and "Peek-a-boo". He does have "Nippy" sessions which I'm trying to understand, but on the whole is an intelligent sweet bird and I do feel his nippy sessions are lessening. I'm so happy I decided to go for it and I thank all who answered my initial posting and urged me to go for it !!! xoxo

Hi, and Charlie & Teddy thank you for the compliment, smile.gif I too only got Charlie not quite 2 wks ago. They are quite the entertainers. Not afraid of anything. Wait until your Quaker says something, you'll be in heaven !!

Welcome fellow Canadian!! Charlie and your doggie are very cute! That cage looks very tall! I hope everyone gets along well, be very cautious of your dogs around Charlie. You just never know when instinct is going to kick in.
