I just wanted to post a few things that I could think of that should not be used around birds for new bird owners.
1: Do not use finger nail polish or remover anywhere near them.
2: Don't use non stick cookware. It puts off a leathal fume for birds.
3: Don't give them grit it can compact in their craw.
4: Use only stainless steel metal in their cages. Other metals can give them toxic metal poison.
5: Do not use arrosols around them. Such as air fresheners, furniture polish, etc.
If any one can think of anything else please add. Can not think of anything else right off the top of my head. I would like to know about candles. I've been told that it is a no no also

Good Tips there Mark....
Is there anything else you can add to this. You and several others seem to be more knowledgeable than me.

Scented candles are dangerous, as well.
There are also several kinds of plants which are poisonous: Poinsettia, Rhododendron, Philodendron, Nightshade, Holly, Mistletoe, and a few others.

OVENS and STOVES: Do not use the self cleaning feature with your birds anywhere near, they will suffer serious effects or die.
Do not use oven cleaners around your birds
Do not use oven cooking bags
The drip pans underneath the stove elements are teflon, try to avoid buying a new appliance that uses those
Buying a new oven? ask the store to plug it in and run it before delivery to burn off the coatings
HOUSEHOLD DANGERS: Bleach, aerosols, strong smelling cleaners like pine scent, hair sprays, nail polish and remover, new carpet
New furniture with stain guards, certain paints or varnish

NEVER take your bird outside unless he is in a cage/ carrier or harnessed. Yes- even if his wings are clipped. With a gust of wind and a fright even a clipped bird can (and will) fly.
No- your bird is NOT so attached to you he would never fly away and not come back. NO- NOT EVEN YOURS.

I guess to add to my oven tips : Do not allow your birds in the kitchen while you are cooking on the stove, you never know if they'll try and fly to you and end up in a pot
Ceiling fans should never be on while your bird is out of it's cage.

Always board your birds somewhere safe if you have to call in an exterminator. Give your home several days to air out before bringing your birds home (though this applies to all pets really). This applies to things like flea bombs & other pestacides - do not use them around your bird and keep those fids out of the area for a few days. Any form a pestacide is deadly.
With the holidays approaching - Holiday trees, tinsel, lighting, garland & any other decorations can be dangerous to pets in general & often extremely dangerous to a curious fid. You'd be surprised at how many tinsel, tree lights & ingestion of other items found on decorations.
With winter coming for us in the northern hemisphere - please have your furnaces & heating units inspected. This is the season to check that carbon monoxide detector to make sure its working too. Dont warm up cars in a closed garage if that garage is attached to the house as those fumes might get into the home & make your fids sick.
Never leave a dryer door opened unattended & always check the dryer before shutting the door.
