I have been reading this forum for weeks and thanks to Shelly have finally gotten registered. I wrote a note a few minutes ago, but do not know where it went. I have never really particiapted on forums before.
I am looking at a Little Blue Baby Quaker this weekend to see if it wants to come home with me in a couple of weeks.
I had one for three days, but when we did the well check the vet said it seemed to have a muffled sounding heart and lungs and appeared not to be well. She was such a sweet baby. She never made a sound hardly. Her first Mommy is a wonderful kind hearted breeder who loves all her birds. She took her back and is going to keep an eye on her. She is keeping her as a pet. But I do miss her. Part of me just wants to go back and get her, but this lady knows more about how to take care of her.
I haven't had a bird since I was 8 years old and I am now 60........so I will need all the help I can get.

Welcome. I hope the baby gets well and you get a little one. I tell all the NC folks that if you are in the Charlotte area to keep Dr. Lauren Powers in mind. She is a great avian vet and saved my little Toby when the first vet had given up. She is in Huntersville. In any case. Best of luck. Hope you get a new companion.

Hi,
Thanks for the ups Dr. Powers in Huntersville. I took Little Baby Blue for a well check to Dr. Chris Griffin in Kannapolis. Before he even examined her, he said that Blue Quakers have a lot of health issues and for me to be prepared for it. Then after the exam he said Little Blue had a muffled heart, lungs and was a little weak for her size. I wonder if he was a little over the top.
So when I get my next one I will go to Dr. Powers. We are planning on moving back to Mooresville as soon as our house in the NC mtns. sells, so she would be very close to us.
Part of me would like to go back and get my first little quaker and take her to Dr. Powers and see if she feels the same way.
Little Blue did not play with her toys and pretty much stayed in one part of the cage all muffled up, but I wonder if this was because she was stressed at leaving her home and coming to my house. Oh well, I could rethink this a dozen times.
Thanks.

Thank you. I just got my second baby yesterday, another blue Quaker. Took it to an Aviary Vet today. Came back with four medicines. I just did not have the heart to take this little boy back to original owner. The vet said they see very few baby birds. Usually the owners waits until they really get sick and then bring them in.
I will figure out how to post pictures and post them
Where in NC are you from?

I'd say welcome to NC but I just moved from the Charlotte area (Huntersville) 6 weeks ago. I'm in TN now.
I used Dr. Wheelock for my vet. He's seen many of my animals. Birds, dogs, sugar gliders, etc...
http://www.dilworthanimalhospital.com/dilw...alhospital.htmlI found Dr. Power to be horribly money hungry. She wanted to have me pay for over $100.00 in tests just for a nail clip. Some neighbors had some similar complaints.

No, I don't think you need to worry. My vet says that the green quakers are a lot healthier and sees very little problems with them. If I had it to do all over again, I would probably haven gotten a little green one. I just read that they are a lot nosier and tend to bite. We will be in our motorhome a lot with our little one so I was a little concerned about the noise.
My little blue is cuddly also. Does your little QP shake his head. The vet is concerned about mine shaking his head and he thinks it is a calcium deficiency. She seems to only do it when he thinks I want him to step up and he doesn't want to.
I think mine is 8 weeks old too. So far I have spent a lot with the vet. It cost $75.00 for a well check and I ended up returning the first blue last week because of major health issues. I spent $250.00 on this one yesterday and they want to do $189.00 in tests. I decided to just do the meds now and see what happens. I just can't take this one back, I'm in love.

I'm sure we all want the very best for any of our pets but I think that a lot of the vets take advantage of that. I've had test given to ME that were cheaper that what a vet charges.!!!!
