I just got my first quaker 2 days ago.
I do not know if it is a male or female, I have just been calling her a "she" for now smile.gif
and her original name is "Happy" and it will be until I find out her sex.

The woman I got her from found her outside her house and Happy just came right down to her from a tree, the woman though did not have enough time for Happy after about 1 month. I saw the ad on craigslist and couldn't resist her! The woman told me Happy had not been out of her cage for almost a week because she was attacking their daughter and wouldn't stop screaming.

From the minute I got in the car to drive us home she had to be as close as she could to me in her cage and would give me kisses - If I said gimmie kiss and make the sound she would do it back haha so for an hour and a half that's what we did and she got treats at the stop lights.

Her cage was so little and she only had 1 perch and 2 toys sad.gif I felt so bad for her. Her cage for now is the minimum size for a quaker because they lady told me it was "large" hah so I didn't buy a new one before I got her but that is next on my list to buy smile.gif

I truly am in love with this little bird already! She is just so charming even though she will not let me touch her to sav anyones life. Today I tought her how to step up onto a handheld perch since she will bit my fingers and she does good with the perch so I can transfer her to different play areas.

Happy doesn't talk. She only says one thing which is "thank you" atleast she knows some manners! ahhaa Her wings are not clipped yet - I don't feel comfortable doing it myself so I have to make time to take her in to get them done. I used to have an umbrella cockatoo (still do but he's with my parents) and his wings were easy to clip because he would just spread them hha but Happy is another story.

Does anybody have any advice on getting her to warm up to me? Whenever I leave the room she screams and whines and she doesn't take her eyes off of me and she will eat things from my hands.

Also, how can I ease her screaming?

Here is a photo of her!

Wish I had words of advice for you, but I am new to this myself after not having any birds for a few years. Good luck with her though and welcome to the forum from one newbie to another.

Hello, welcome, and congratulations!

May I make a likely unpopular suggestion, please? The behavior you have described that Happy is exhibiting makes me think she is someone's pet, and they are perhaps missing her terribly. Have you, or did the other woman, post "Found Bird" ads, or peruse the newspaper, vets' offices, animal shelters, etc. for "Lost Bird" ads? She sounds like a sweet girl, and I know if one of my guys - God forbid! - was lost, I would be devastated, and desperate to get him/her back. sad.gif

Welcome .Sounds like Happy is going to be very happy you have her now.

she is gorgeous!
is it just hands shes afraid of? if so, you might be able to lure her straight onto your shoulder.
in terms of getting her to warm up to you,
make it possible for her to reach you if she wants to,
eg have her on top of her cage, and allow her to come around in her own time,
That worked on my cockatiels but theyre all different,
so just take a while and try a few methods, and find out what works best!
happy.gif she is definitely a cutie!

Well she was found at an apartment complex - I was told the staff there knew the 2 women who owned the bird and they said she was kept outside on their balcony and always got complaints about her screaming. I do not know if anyone was contacted though as the apartment complex is not allowed to give out personal info - I do not know anything about it or what the other women tried to do see if a home could be found - all I know is she talked to apartment staff about it.

Thank you all smile.gif
I am currently trying to switch her to zupreem but she doesn't want anything to do with it yet.
Whenever I uncover her in the morning the first thing she does is give kisses, Maybe because she lieks me already? or thats the only thing she knows! hahahaa

Saurus - I am not sure if that is all she is afraid of. With the hand held perch she attacks it before she will step up on it and even then I bribe her with a treat haha, I don't think she is too scared of hands because she will take anything from my fingers that is offered to her and she won't try to bite me, jsut take the food but any other time my hand is the enemy.

Alot of times when I'm home I'm on the computer or just lounging around. She has a standing perch right next to the couch and she could get to me if she wants. Sometimes I hear her moving closer and when I look she runs back.it's like she is trying to sneak up on me haha.

Hahaha!
I think she will definitely warm up to you considering she wants to be with you,
She might just be a bit unsure considering she's only been there a few days.
Keep persevering! happy.gif
