Hello all! My name is maggie and I just got my very first Quaker on September 17th this year. So I have only had my Quaker a bit over 2 weeks! Wow! feels like it has been much longer! LOL!

I had been looking into getting a parrot for years, but couldnt decide which bred I wanted. After much deliberation I decided that a quaker sounded perfect for me and my family. So I began my search for the perfect Quaker companion. I soon Discovered Jinx!

Jinx is 10 months old, and was hand raised from hatching. Jinx had to be re-homed due to family issues. So she came home with me and my family. She has fit right in perfectly. She is still adjusting to us and our home, but is just amazing! Jinx knows how to say peek-a-boo, She loves to snuggle in her blanky and play Peek-a-boo. Its so cute. My hubby just recently taught her how to Wolf Whistle lol! But that is ablout all she knows for now. But we are working with her daily. I am working to teach her to step up, and also to take treats and to eat pellets as she will only eat seeds right now. She also has just started as of two days ago, to come out of her cage, which was a big step for her YAY!

Our family is a big animal household, lol. People call my house "Maggies Farm" lol. we currently have: 1 Bloodhound/Lab mix named Duke, 1 Australian Shephard named Shep, 3 Domestic Shorthair Cats from the same Litter named Monkey, Teeny and loki. A 75 gallon tank of African Cichlid Fish, 2 Parakeets Named Snowy and Ozzy. 2 Zebra Finches named Piper and Nebo. a flock of roughly 30 chickens and growing, including I-Hop our One legged Auraucauna Chicken. 1 Pygmy goat Named Billy-Bob and a Hereford Steer Named Oom (moo spelled backwards lol) I also have two boys ages 13 and 9, and a loving Husband who is just amazing when it comes to my animals!

Ok I think I have talked enough ha ha ha ha! I have more reading to do on this amazing website!

Hello Maggie - welcome to the forum - a great site for information on Quakers!
My household loves animals too - and getting everyone to co-habitate is sometimes a challenge ha ha
Looking forward to seeing more pictures of Jinx...he is a sweetie!
Take care,

Andie's Mom
Hi Jinx Mom, Welcome to the forum...Sounds like a busy house, I know exactly how that is. tongue.gif

Since you've had parakeets a while you probably have the basics down pretty well...however, Quakers are a species all their own... biggrin.gif Since they are prone to fatty liver disease or abbreviated FLD a straight seed diet is a definite no no...They need to have a diet consisting of pellets anywhere from 50 to 80 percent and then the remainder being comprised of fruits and veggies, legumes etc. Seed is alright as a treat but then not an every day treat.

If you haven't already, I would strongly recommend you purchase the book, "A Guide To Quaker Parrots" by Mattie Sue Athon. The book is a great resource not only for Quuakers but other parrots as well. She gives you tips on handling and training as well as how to avoid problems before they occur.

I like to tell people new to parrots to try and spend only the amount of time when youu first bring them home as you'll be able to spend with them for the next 30 years...Meaning if you lavish them with constant attention now, they will grow to expect the same amount of attention as the first got and when that changes they can develop some pretty bad habits to get your attention. And it only takes once or twice of running to their cage when they scream for them to figure out that if they scream you'll come running. Treat them as you would a 2 year old human, put names to every action and be consistant. Try not to make a big deal out of poor behavior and really praise and reward good behavior and you'll be amazed at what your little bundle of green feathers can be capable of accomplishing.

Good luck and again welcome to the forum, don't be afraid to ask any questions you might have. No question is dumb, stupid, or silly here at QP.com.

Thanks so much for the info. I do have that book by the way, I love it. I am trying to convert Jinx to pellet, but so far Jinx refusses. But we will keep trying lol.
Andie's Mom
In the diet and health section here there's a conversion method you might give a try. It really does work, it might take a little while but we've never had any problems with converting birds by using this method. Its called Andie's Conversion method...

Good luck. biggrin.gif
