When I brought Sammy to the vet he weighed 80 grams and the Vet said he was a skinny little guy but looked healthy. Everything came back normal. Anyway I plan on buying a good gram scale so that I can track his weight to make sure he is gaining or staying around the same. I have done some research and have read that there are 4 sub-species of Quakers and some are on the smaller side. When I read posts on here about weights Sammy seems to be the smallest and it gets me a little concerned. I brought him to the vet a few weeks ago so I will weigh him again tonight and post an update about his current weight. Do you think it's bad that he is around 80 grams? Is it more likely that he is actually a girl due to the small size?

Im still learning myself, but I read somewhere that females can sometimes be slightly larger than males. I dont really know much about how much they should weigh, but I have a meat scale here that I put Khego on. I got it for about $30 at Wal-Mart. Anyway it worked great and my sweet lil fid climbed right on. He (or she) is 17 weeks now and and is 85g.

Sammy is a cute name smile.gif I was actually considering calling Khego Samari, but that would be Sam for short and we lost a dwarf bunny less than a year ago named Sam (after the Hobbit in Lord of the Rings) so it just didnt seem right.

Thanks!!! I like the name Khego too!!! Sorry for the loss of your little rabbit. I am guessing Sammy must be around 85 grams now but I will know for sure later. I am going to stop at the store after work to pick up a scale. That's interesting that females can be bigger than males. I have been thing about finding out his sex so I guess we will see.

Just an update...I finally got a gram scale and I weighed Sammy just a few minutes ago and he weighs 90 grams. I will also check his weight in the morning to see the difference. When I brought him to the vet it was around the same time as now so I am very happy with the weight gain.

I also forgot to mention that he is a blue and I have heard blues are on the smaller side is this true?
Andie's Mom
Blues tend to be a bit smaller, finer boned if you will; but then again it just depends on what the original sub species was, I have 3 blues out in my aviary, the one pair Male and female are nearly the same size but my pallid blue male is a larger bird than the other two. I haven't weighed them so can't offer their findings to you.

As we've mentioned before in other threads you can tell if your bird is too thin by how much you can feel his keel bone, if it protudes a lot then he's too thin and needs some weight put on So if his keel feels like an inverted V he's too thin, You shoulud be able to feel meat on both sides of the keel bond and it should be fairly firm not mushy, if its mushy or if you notice that they have cleavage then they're too fat.

My vet has told me that a good average is between 90 and 150 grams...150 for a bigger bird. If you have a small framed bird and he weighs a 150 grams you're pretty apt to see cleavage. biggrin.gif I've seen the larger species that have weighed up around a 170 grams and that's really pretty heavy for them as well...

Also keep in mind that a bird is at its heaviest right before they are weaned and then they will lose a little bit until they figure out what to eat and how much to eat then they're weight will climb. Depending on how active the bird is will also determine how lean they are.
