I am so worried. I gave my little one the antifungal meds this morning and he threw up four times and is all puffed up and is not acting right. He is also on calcium, probiotics, and antibiotics, and a yeast med. When I gave him the nystatin is when he threw up so much.

I jut don't want to give up on this little one and send him back to the breeder. My vet says he will work with me.

Any one else have these problems with a new little quaker baby? He is suppose to be 8 weeks old. He shakes his little head an awful lot especially after he threw up. The vet set this was a sign of calcium deficiency which could indicate a liver problem

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am so sorry to hear this. I personally have no experience with anything of this sort, so I am afraid I cannot give any advice. Maybe someone else on here will be able to help you out. I hope you figure out what is wrong and your baby gets better very soon.

It would probably be a good idea to call up your vet and let him know how it's going this morning. How pitiful- poor little one sad.gif

I agree about calling the Vet and let him know what your baby is doing. Also, is the breeder aware that he is sick? You might want to let them know......Sorry if this is posted somewhere else (haven't been on in a couple of days)

Buddie and I were at the vets for 3 hrs. yesterday. I did call him this morning when Buddie threw up after taking nystatin, antifungal medication.
Vet told me to give it to him next time a little at a time and then a little water to get the taste out of his mouth.

Buddie is now eating Milet seeds and took just a few bites of oatmeal I made for him. I had read on this forum where a lot of you guys give little ones oatmeal to make them feel better.

He had lost 10% of his body weight in two days when I took him to the vet.. That really scares me. But he did eat alot for breakfast, but I think he threw most of it up after his meds.

I think he is younger than what the bird store said. They said he was hatched some time between July 18th and 26th. I really don't want to have to take him back to the store. So if you guys have any suggestion, please pass them along to me. And thanks for everything.

Just to add this on for those people who are in the know... isn't 8 weeks a little young for a baby to be done weaning? If memory serves the quaker babies on average don't seem to be released from their breeders (scanning posts of people who are waiting for their babies to be weaned) until they're closer to 12 weeks.... that's a whole month difference. You might want to consider picking up some baby mash and adding a couple of baby feedings back into the day.

LOL I feel like I keep suggesting this one over and over again! Baby mash seems to be the cure all for many ills.... biggrin.gif Am I just baby mash happy?

Dancing Feather,

If your baby is only 8 weeks old, and this sick he definately needs to be handfed. They can go downhill really quickly. Do you have any handfeeding formula? Do you know how he was handfed before you got him? I have raised a lot of babies and have had very few to wean them selves at 8 weeks old. It does happen but for him to be sick I have my doubts he is fully weaned. Where are you located? If you are new any of us that raise them I bet someone would be willing to show you how to handfeed him. Also, with him being so sick, keep him in a hospital tank with a light on him. Keep him warm. If you want to call me you can at 870-897-1369. I would be happy to talk you through some of the steps that I think you should take at home. Sounds like your vet is really trying with the meds. That is good, but there are many little things that we can do at home to help also.

I agree with Cathy....I doubt that he is completely weaned at only 8 weeks....I'm actually kind of surprised that your vet hasn't mentioned this.

I have a 10 gallon glass aquarium that I use for a hospital tank. I cover the bottom with at least one hand towel, most often I use two. Then in goes the sick baby, and I cover half of the tank with a heating pad (on top of the screen cover), with a towel over that. On the other end, I use a lamp (I think they're called goose-neck, with a flexible stand thing) to give light...

I hope this helps, I don't have any experience with hand-feeding, but it sounds like Cathy can help you, and I know there are many others on here who know how.

Many prayers are going out to you and your baby!

Thank you guys so much for your help. I am calling the breeder tomorrow to talk with them about his exact age, what they had been feeding him, how long he has been eating on his own, etc. They were so busy the day I picked him up and the girl who handfed him was the one I talked to. She talked so much and not about the things that I needed to know. All she wanted, was to make sure I took this little fellow home with me.

This afternoon he has eaten Harrisons fine food and seems to be better. Tonight when I gave him his medicine he did not throw it up. I gave him the one that made him throw up in small increments every 30 minutes until he was finished. Each time I put water in a syringe and gave him that so the tase would not stay in his mouth. Then I held him close for at least 30 minutes.

Thanks for everyones help. I am going to make sure he is warm tonight. I kept the temperature around 76 all night in our motorhome.

Poor thing. sad.gif I would call the vet. Maybe try something different. Also, try and make sure he eats before the meds too. Some meds just don't agree with some people- orbirds.

Poor little guy, bless you for not giving up on him. I agree with everyone else, he needs to get back onto the hand feeding for awhile until he's stronger and healthier.

Oh Bless this little fella Dear Lord!? I hope all will be ok...Bless you too. wub.gif

How is the baby this morning? I hope you got some hand feeding formula and got him to eat something. He needs food he can digest!! Shame on that breeder!! Sounds like they were out for the money, not the bird's interests if all the handfeeder talked about was how you had to take that baby home that day! mad.gif Makes me soooo angry to see breeders like that! Babies are supposed to be raised and loved and FED CORRECTLY until they can go home with their new families, not just force weaned and pushed out of the nest asap for a buck!! sad.gif Poor little thing.

Hand feeding for another month or so would be so good for him, IF he makes it this far. If you can't do it, I would definitely take him to someone one who can, and I wouldn't necessarily take him back to that breeder .... if they didn't care the first time, what makes you think they'll care the second time with him?? mad.gif

I hope the little guy makes it. Bless you for caring, but it just breaks my heart to read the problems he's having already in his short life.

Poor little guy ...sending hugs and prayers for him to get well really soon..

I'm so glad that you are helping him fight for his life!

When I was a little boy, we adopted this puppy that turned out to be on death's door. We worked with our vet, my Mom gave her her meds, and she got her healthy. She turned out to be the strongest middle sized dog we ever did see!!!!!!!!!!!

Keep up the fight!

Thanks to everyone for your concern. Little Buddie is doing okay. He seems to be coming into his own a little more; however, he is still not putting on weight. He wieghs 83 grams and when I got him two weeks ago the breeder said he weighed 90 grams. I called the breeder and asked for an exact birth date and this time was told it he was hatched on July 29th.

I think part of his problem is the meds he is on. The nystatin is the one that makes him throw up every other time he takes it. A lot of times at night I won't give him the nystatin. I hope this is okay. I am going to call the vet tomorrow. The vet told me it was very important that he take it, but I feel he can't afford to lose any more weight.

As far as his eating, I can't seem to find any people food he will eat except for corn and he will attempt to eat a little grits. The sweet potato mash that I fixed, he would not even try. And the little booger won't eat in his cage. He only eats if I put the food on top of his cage and I sit with him. He does eat his Harrison food (fine pellets)

I am not giving up on him. He such a sweet little boy.
msdani1981
Buy him some handfeeding formula. Corn is very hard to digest. You can also give a little bit of plain yogurt and cottage cheese, and some organic human baby food.
Siobhan
I can't imagine that a medicine that makes him throw up is doing him any good. You should most definitely tell this to the vet. Poor little guy. Maybe there's an alternative medication that he could take instead. Meanwhile, keep trying to find things he'll eat. Mine love mashed potatoes -- have you tried that? And Clyde refused to touch sweet potatoes at first until he saw me eating them and once he tried them, he just went NUTS for them. Dived in headfirst and didn't emerge until they were all gone, with a bunch on his face. Oatmeal is another idea, the regular Quaker Oats, not the instant ones. The regular ones are very easy to make, just cool them off before you give them to him.

I'll bet the good news here is that with all this attention and care, you and he will have a very close bond WHEN (not IF) he's all well.

moonchild1970
I hope that you will go back to the vet and let him know the meds are not staying down long enough to do any good and this way he can give you something else so your baby does not get worse.

Hand feeding is going to be important here I think. I would really get him back on the formula. You can also make a mash with the Harrison's, crush the pellets and mix with a little bit of apple juice and see if he'll eat that.

Can you see another vet for a second opinion? I would take her somewhere else. Why is she on meds? Does she have a yeast infection? My bird is on diflucan. Maybe that would be better. She really likes baby food with 7 grain cereal from whole foods. She is very picky.
