Mox is growling lately. I have no clue what she is trying to say to me. Do you all think this is an angery thing, or just a noise to make?

Are you sure it's not a purr? Quakers have a purr- yup, just like a kitty purr- that is a very happy noise....

Ya know, I am not sure. I don't know that I have ever heard a Quaker purr. Mox is 9 weeks or so, so maybe that is still to come.

What does a Purr sounds like....is that really possible to describe in words?

It sounds like a person trying to imitate a cat's purr. And it does mean they're very happy and content. Roll your tongue (like "RRRRRRRRuffles have RRRRRRRRRRRidges") and that's the sound.

It truly does sound just like a kitty purr- just a little rumbly noise. You could try a search on the forum for past threads about the quaker purr- it has been a popular topic because I think everyone who doesn't know about it is pretty suprised the first time they hear it
The only time my quakers growl is when we play tug-of-war with a tissue or toy. I always growl at them like my pup does when she plays so they picked it up too- definitely a learned vocalization.
The other thing is maybe think about what sounds your little girl hears in the house and the words and noises you make to her. maybe she's trying to mimic something she's hearing...

Its probably the purr and yes, it does mean contentment...Especially if its feathers are fluffed up on his head and neck.

If the feathers are tight against the head they usually do a little more of a hiss sound meaning they are afraid or trying to scare you away...

Well her feathers are tight to her body, but she does not act aggressive towards me. It's more like she is ready for bed, or doesnt want any more food, sometimes I just dont know why.

I am certainly looking foward to that purr now.

Do you have any other critters who growl? A dog, maybe? Clyde can do a little dog growl perfectly, and sometimes follows it up with a little yippy bark. Never fails to make me howl with laughter, so naturally, he does it again. He can also do our dogs' barks. Yours might just be imitating something he's heard, too.

Well, thats a good question and yes we have a dog, however, I have never heard her growl in all of the 5 years we have had her. I will have to pay attention today to see what noise she is copying.

oh my god! Our first quaker (he pass) would growl..but when he does .. i knew to look outside my window and i will find a car or UPS or someone mowing the field or whatever .. he was my guard bird! so if you really think your baby is growling ..then look around and see what she is seeing and if something is "bothering" her!! See if that's it ..

my xerxey does that to and he lets out a completely different call.. the stranger danger call is coming. so i know instantly that someone like the mailman or the ups guy is coming. xerxey dont take kindly to strangers. he sure protects his flock!!

Well Oliver growls and barks. I'm waiting on the meow next from him and the cat to howl. Ok I never said my household was right lol. Olliver growles at the kids across the street thru the window.

Racal growls when I play with his toys or my mother or daughter get near him

Ok, I figured it out. She growls when she wants to be put to bed. It was so odd, she started making these growwwwwling noises, and we laughed, but she wasnt happy! Sitting with her, next to her cage, I could see that she was aggitated. I asked her if she wanted to go to sleep and she growld at me. I put her in her cage, and started putting the blanket over it and she made her happy noises, got into her hut and was content.

Our birds usually go to bed at 8, but she has chosen 7.

Very strange little bird, but at least I figured it out. It sounds like many quakers growl, for many different reasons.

Verde growls when anyone new comes to the door or walks by the big patio window by his cage. The growling increases in sound and pitch the closer the strangers get to him. It is basically an irritated or scared sound.

He purrs when he gets his scritches or cuddle. His purr always sounds the same and is much softer like a cat's purr.
