Earlier this evening, I was petting His Royal Highness and he was preening and suddenly he pecked at something in the middle of his back, squawked, slicked all his feathers down tight, and flew to Hubby, did the same thing on him, flew to his cage, flew back to me, repeat, repeat, repeat, for about five minutes. Over and over. Each time he landed on me, he was very agitated, running up and down my arms, feathers still slicked down tight, peck at his back, squawk, fly off. He wouldn't hold still to let me look to see what might be bothering him and if I touched his back, he'd squawk and fly off. I was going to get a towel, at Hubby's suggestion, and make him hold still so I could look, and then it occurred to me to try setting him on his perch to see if he'd let me look while he was there. That worked, and I looked very carefully and couldn't see a thing wrong with him, and that time he let me pet him all over and behaved perfectly normally, and he hasn't done it since.

Could he have got a feather crossways while he was preening and it upset him that much? His back LOOKED fine, but he sure didn't like SOMETHING back there.

Hmmm...its quite possible, or maybe he has a new feather trying to poke through??? He may have bumped up against something in his cage too and bruised it a bit. Just keep an eye on him and see if it happens again.

He'd been out of his cage for hours and hours at the time this happened. This was around 9 p.m. and he'd been out since around 2 p.m., and I'd already been carrying him around on my shoulder or hand for most of the time since he'd been out. So I don't think he could have bumped it on anything. He's been fine ever since. Maybe he was just having a weird Quaker moment. laugh.gif
Sandi Kiwis Mom
Mr. Kiwi was squawking to high heaven one night and I couldn't figure out why. He kept looking at the bottom of his cage. I took him out and put him on my shoulder and investigated........there was a tinee, tiny spider in there.....I killed the spider and Mr. Kiwi was ok. I tell ya they have very good eyesite smile.gif

Maybe a itch that was bugging him ..lol.. or a flea... smile.gif (kidding) hope it doesn`t happen again .... smile.gif
Cacophony
I know this sounds silly, but one of his feathers could have been off colour or appeared off colour, he noticed it and was having trouble reaching it to "fix" it? I keep reading what great dermatologists quakers make... *cringes* ...so an odd light reflection or something looking "different" could have tossed him into a tizzy.

Sounds like an owie. Maybe he was grooming and hit a blood feather. Those hurt. Did you try and examine it yet?
