Lola the parrot
I know I don't post here much. I've used this site to learn so much about Lola.

She was the sweetest bird. Anyone could hold her. She talked - - and every day when I came home from work she got so excited and I had to go hold her. She sat on my head or my shoulder every day. We groomed each other. She kissed me. She had to be around me as much as possible. That bird loved me so much.

I don't know why she died. I have NO IDEA. She's been so healthy and so happy and so energetic.

The temperature changed yesterday and we had to turn on the heat. The landlord couldn't get it on for a few hours so it got cold in the apartment. Icould tell Lola was cold (or was she sick?) So I got her and held her and she perked up and was happy to be held. Today she seemed ok. She sat on her perch - - but now that I think about it - I don't remember her squawking like she usually does. I was sitting by her cage writing all morning. Then I had to go out. I noticed she pooped in her water and changed the water - put some treats in her cage - and then walked out to go run my errands. My son and I went around to find someone to clip her wings. We checked out this one place and decided that we were going to take her there. We came home and she was dead on the bottom of the cage - still soft. So I panicked and was trying to talk to her and ask her what she was doing. I called my friend who does animal rescues but nothing helped. Lola was dead.

I didn't expect this. It's so sudden and I'm not sure why she died. So now I've cried for the past 4 hours. I miss my bird so much.

i am SO sorry for your loss.

unfortunately, birds are able to hide illness so well that it's usually to late by the time you notice something is wrong.

So many people say that they get sick and die quickly. But I'm really upset because what if she was sick last night and not just cold? I thought she was cold. But she then acted ok and this morning she didn't act like she was dying or I would have taken her to a vet. I thought I knew my bird very well, so how did she die so suddenly? I was not prepared for this at all. She was a very special bird as she went to EVERYONE even my friend's 2 year old could put out her arm and Lola would sit on it (supervised of course) When new people came to visit, Lola would go over to check out the new person. She LOVED people. I've never seen such a tame bird. She was so sweet.

Oh!!!!!!!!! I feel so bad for you. Really, the only thing that can make this better is time. Just a little thought into the future. If you think you may get a new fid sometime, it might be helpful, then, to have a necropsy done know. At least you may know what to avoid in the future. Too bad it won't help Lola, though.

Lot's-o hugs, and prayers going your way. Hang in there.

I'm so sorry. My heart goes out to you with the loss of Lola.

Please pardon me for bringing this up at this time but you may want to consider having a necropsy done. If it isn't too late, you need to place her in a zip lock bag & place her in the refrigerator until you can get her to an avian vet for a necropsy. That is the only way you can know what happened to Lola & if it was something that could harm or kill another bird should you find it in your heart to give another bird a home.

I am so sorry for your loss and the pain you feel. I was raised with birds ALL my life and have lost a few the same way, for no reason, and I know it feels awful. There are no words to describe your pain and no words that help relieve it either. I wish I had a magic wand that would make you feel better. Sadly, I don't, so I will just cry with you and your family.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. Sometimes, these things just happen despite our very best efforts at giving our fids the very best. It might help your closure to have a post mortem autopsy done. Several years ago, I had a very wonderful lovely young dog suddenly die of completely unrelated causes. I gave him the best of the best, organic raw food and did everything I could to give him a wonderful life. He never to me, had any kind of health issues, and got regular healthcare. My friend recommended autopsy- turned out he had a hole in his heart, congenital defect and that he never would have lived the 4 years he did had he been cared for like most dogs. It made me feel so much better to know that I had helped him to have a good life, the vet told me he suffered no pain.

You might consider that- yes, take note of the truth that birds are so very, very good at hiding illness. I have lost more then a few birds that come into rescue and my own over the years. I have had birds recover that were very obviously gravely ill. I have had birds die of shock- coming in to a good environment from very bad. I have, I am certain paid for at least one luxury car in vet bills- and I assure you, sometimes even all the money in the world would not have helped. A very small thing can cause the worst. Even if you DID do something unknowingly that caused her death, it is so easy to do and completely understandable. No one will blame you, and you should never blame yourself. You can help others and yourself to know what went wrong- prevenatable or not. I would suspect that it is just one of those things, and even the most experienced bird person would have done no different then you- a loss is very hard to take- no matter the cause. They say, only the good die young- and it is even common amongst human beings who can communitate their ails. For example, my aunt passed very suddenly and unexpectedly in very good health at a young age due to anuerism. It happens, so if you do an autopsy- no matter the outcome- you did the best you could with what you knew- and it is NOT your fault.

I know how much it hurts to loose a dear friend, and wonderful companion. It might help you to move on if you have the answers. I would also encourage you to find another bird when you are ready. Perhaps a different species, so that you have a different expectation of your new fid. You might then become a multiple fid parront when you are ready to be had by another qp.

I wish there was something else I could say or do to help you during this difficult time.

Blessed be,

J

Your post broke my heart. She was obviously happy with a wonderful owner. You gave her a great life, please know you were both blessed to have each other even for a short time. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Very sorry for your loss. My 9 year old cocktail passed away this year. no idea why.
Not to be an alarmist, but my 1st thought was do you have gas heat? Birds have very delicate lungs and such. If you could not get the heat to come on for 4 hours and you had gas heat? I know they add something to the gas to make it smell bad but. Just a thought.
