Hi people! Very sad to be this my first post. First of all sorry for my engish, i will try to be the clearest i can

I'm writing because i have one of my three quaker parrots very ill... I have already attented two vets... They have gave me lots (LOTS!!) of antiobiotics, vitamins, aminoacids, diets and i we have even tried with nebulizations and my little quaker parrot doesn't show improvements on his health...Indeed it seems to be each day worse.

So i decided to write here with the hope to find someone that has the same problem as me. Here in Argentina the health and medicine of birds is very primitive and BASIC, no studies can be done the vets said me; they are vets specialized in exotic birds so imagine if i have gone to 'ordinary vets'...

Well here are the symptoms: My quaker parrot was very active, he used to run for all the house! 3 months ago he began to be slippy the whole day, he didn't like to run anymore, we could easily see that he wasn't fine... Some weeks ago he began throwing up WHITE MUCUS (yes from the beak) and didn't seem to be breathing well...
He also has his right eye very swollen (he have also gave him some antibiotic in drops for the eye problem but nothing sad.gif )

I also noticed that he is skinner than before so i'am very worried that it could be a liver or some digestive problem...

I repeat, i'm writing here as a last instance, we have gave him lots of antibiotics, we are fighting since 3 months and a half but nothing happens. Has somebody go through some similar situation??

Please only posts concerning the symptoms.

Thanks a lot!!

oh my goodness.. you poor thing sad.gif

I hope someone can help you out with this problem. Good luck and I will say a prayer for your little quaker friend.

Have you moved the sick quaker to a different room away from the healthy ones? This would be the only good advice I could give you right now.. except to keep the sick birdy warm and provide lot's of water.

hugs

Hmmm.. Are you saying that you feel the vets you are going to are not as versed or experienced in avian veterinary care as you would wish them to be?

I am sure an experienced qp owner here will chime in- I have not ever owned one, but I have worked with many sick birds. I assume you have set up a hospital cage? Keep your bird warm, no draughts and if there is respiratory symptoms and keep a cold air vapourizern(I gather you have one for nebulizing?) on. Since you say he is obviously loosing weight, I would offer him all the treat goodies he loves and I would also begin spoon feeding mash. Ideally, nice cooked oats mashed with banana and some handfeeding formula. A VERY small amount of steamed to pulp garlic also has good antibotic properties. A SMALL amount though, like a paper thin sliver a day. Keep his cage spotlessly clean- I recommend daily hot water/steam and vinegar water solution. Make sure, especially because he is sick and having respiratory trouble that NO strong smells are around him- even cooking smells.

Now, I haven't used it but I have seen an online avian veterinary q&a consult service- I believe based in the states. It might ease your mind to have the opinion/recommendations of another avian vet? Again, I can't recommend it, but I have seen it- I know the host site is quite reputable- in a pinch, I think I would use it! See: http://www.justanswer.com/pet/bird

Sorry that I can't be more help, as I said- there are many very knowledgable qp people here. I am sure someone will come along shortly to help!

Good luck!

Have you had bloodwork done? This could be the result of metal poisoning. It could also be a severe respiratory infection

Also, please take out any cage bedding like corn cob or anything but newspaper. It has been discovered that cob can swell in the crop and leave no room for food. The bird's crop will look full but the bird will start to lose weight and will starve to death if it is not detected and treated. It has been found in birds as long as 5 years after the owners stopped using it.

I am so sorry! My parrotlet was very ill once. We have no avian vets near us and the only one that was said they were going to charge us 250 just for her to look at my bird! So we took her to a non avian vet and they gave her antibiotics and examined her for only 30! I prayed and kept her warm and seperated her from my budgie and gave her lots of rest and lots of company. I checked on her every 5 min. she was sick for 6 days, for the first 3 she did not show her illness. I prayed and told everyone I new to pray for her and she got better. I just want to let you know that I am praying and everyone I know i will ask to pray. I know what this feels like, Im so sorry. Just do every thing you can, do LOTS of research! Godbless you.

what kind of food do you have your quaker on? Just curious......My quaker, Mr. Kiwi was on seed and pellets for the first four years of his life and I had a blood test done when he wasn't acting right.....his liver enzyme count was high, it was caused from the seed he was on. After a year of switching him to totally pellets, fresh fruits and veggies, his count was wayyyy down.....

Thanks a lot for the warm receivement u gave me smile.gif It's seems a really nice community.

As the bloodwork: i have been researching and three vets told me that here in Argentina isn't possible to do bloodkors on birds! I was astonished! Do you think that is true?

Hopefully i was adviced on the danger of the bedding on the cage, and i have only newspappers under his cages (could be the newspaper harmful for them)?

Actually i'am giving them every day the following foods ( i will post images in some as i haven't got the english name):

.fresh corn
.small zuchinnis? in spanish is "zapallitos" http://nutridieta.com/wp-content/uploads/2...tos-300x227.jpg
.apple
.seeds (red, yellow and white millet, oat, and very few sunflowers seeds)
.sometimes strawberries and banana
.i was giving them grinded corn, here is called 'polenta' http://images.google.com.ar/images?hl=es&a...r+im%C3%A1genes but i stop giving them that and yesterday i change to giving them some cede egg-based food that they love it
.some cereal biscuits

I give them lot of variety of food everyday, should i give them less variety of foods?

I will take into account the warm he needs and of course he is on my shoulder almost everyday...

After he threw up that ugly white mucus it seems he got better, his starts to run everywhere smile.gif but after some minutes he becomes sleepy again.

Yes, I'm very sorry to think this way, but its my impression. I have got another avian veterinary but is very far from home... I'm afraid the drive up to there could be worse than stay with him at home...

Well, thanks again a lot for your help and nice words, i will try to follow your advice and see what happen.

Sounds like they have a great diet! You might want to make the drive to the other vet, Quakers tend to travel pretty well, just keep him covered and warm and he'll be fine!
Majj
He needs to see a proper avian vet asap IMO...make the long trip it may save your birds life...
msdani1981
I agree with Quincy's Slave and Majj....I think you should take him to see the avian vet, even though it is far away. Good luck, we're all praying for you!
