I was wondering if I could use copper wire for the wire used inside the rope on a home made boing? Is it harmful to birds, the copper? KeeWee apriciates your answers. The faster you tell me, the faster he can get a new toy!!! JK!

I would say, no copper, absolutely not! It is a heavy metal- I wouldn't want to be taking any chances that your dear baby could/would/might somehow get to it. I'm not a real fan of anything that is not SS, though I do get donations that have things like nickel bells and stuff that I will use in non distructive birds and watch CLOSELY!

Here is an idea that I have been meaning to get around trying. A kids (the 2 legged variety) plastic slinky toy. My thought, was to cut off a right amount and make a sisal boing out of it. I am not sure what the metal ones are made of, I am almost sure its not ss! But, I haven't found the time to head into toys r us yet!

If you decide to try it and it works, let me know please!

Hope that helps!

Here it is!!! It has three layers of tightly strung yarn over ther the rope and copper. He will NOT chew the yarn (he isn't exaclty that kind of bird). NO copper is exposed. He LOVES it!!! It only took two hours of: stringing yarn over a 3 foot peice of copper and cotten rope, tying the ends off so no copper was exsposed, and taking pics! I'm so happy he likes it, most of the other things I've made he hates. I hope you all like it!

BTW- I can't get the pics to upload for some reason right now (of course), but as soon as I can I will!

The only safe metal is stainless steel ..if you are positive he cant/wont get to it I guess its fine...

I think it is very cute! I'm really glad you got ss wire, I know some birdies don't or won't ever chew, but I am so glad you went the extra step that most people would not and got the ss *just in case* the impossible ever happened!

I think it would be a great idea to share the instructions for everyone here- I really think its much prettier then any storebought one I have ever seen!
