Full Version: Is 7/8 Bar Spacing Too Much?

I want to get my quaker a nice big comfortable cage. The largest cage i can find is 5/8 but doesn't seem to be a big as i'd like. I've found some nice cages that have 7/8 bar spacing but am not sure if this is too much.

Your thoughts please and ideas for cages.
Casey's Mom
Yes, I think that is much too large. 1/2 or 5/8" is recommended, 3/4" has been used but I think it depends on how large your Q is. smile.gif I've been looking for a new cage for Casey for a while now, it's difficult to find a large cage with 5/8" lol. smile.gif

As Casey's mom stated, its recommended 5/8 be the largest, however, when I first started with quakers our cages were 7/8 spacing and I didn't have any problem with the birds getting into trouble, getting heads caught etc. But there are several brands of cage that do offer 5/8 inch bar spacing in larger sized cages. HQ is one of them and they are good quality cages and aren't as expensive as many of the other cages. There are also another company Prevue that makes a nice cage I have both brands currently and I would recommend either brand.

What size cage (how big) are you looking for?

My reasons for wanting a larger cage is so my QP can move around from perch to perch, spread his wings, and not be cramped when he's inside. I figure a 24x24 would be fine but then i think of the space just a few toys would take up and that's why i want a larger cage.

Welcome to the forum! I bought my cage online. It is an HQ cage. http://queencitypets.com/GA82620.asp
It is 26 wide by 20 deep. It gives my bird lots of space for toys and himself....

I'm in the same boat. I like the cage that I have for Chula, but I would like to get a large cage with the wrought iron bars instead of the thinner wire bars. I found a really sweet one locally on craigslist and got excited until I realized that it is 1" spacing. Bummer.

This is one of the cages I found that i really liked. I feel it will offer my bird the freedom to move around with ease. However the bar spacing is 7/8th. Here's the address of the cage. http://www.petsolutions.com/Deluxe-Parrot-...+C40006451.aspx

I thought about that cage once too...While it looks neat and it has a door on the side of the upper part that allows them to go out onto the play top...Which is a neat idea..after having talked to several friends and observed their birds at different times I found that the birds don't tend to use much of the cage...the ones I've watched seem to hang out in the upper part of the cage and very seldom do much on the lower part of the cage, other than go down to eat.

Its also hard to reach the bird if he's down in the lower corners and you basically have to crawl inside the cage yourself to move toys around etc.

I've observed that even with toys and things hung down in the lower part under the play top area, they don't like to be there. I'm not sure why unless its because its darker there from the play pen drop pan or that it feels cramped to them.

In every instance where my friends have had that style they've ended up replacing it with a cage that is not so compartmentalized and just made different levels with different kinds of perches.

Of course this is just my opinion...

My cage is 24x36 wide and has 3/4inch bar space no problems ....

This one on the same link looks great...

I agree with Connie.. people always seem so intrigued by that cage and I just don't understand, lol. Casey very rarely uses the entire cage (and it's only 18x20, but she's out a lot) as she likes to stay up higher (sure she goes down to get stuff she drops etc. but she doesn't "play" in the entire cage) With that cage that you posted, I really don't think that a bird would use the bottom left, they have a natural instinct to be up high so I just can't see a bird willingly hanging out SO far down unsure.gif I personally think 24x24 would be plenty big, even if you work outside of the home and he'll spend a lot of time in the cage smile.gif

Happy shopping! smile.gif

Thanks so much everyone for all of your thoughtful replies! This site is definitely a helpful tool. After reading reviews on the oh-so-large cage, I've decided that i really like the ez care medium playtop cage listed just above. It seems like a very good cage. Thanks again everyone. I'm sure i'll be back with lots more questions about all things Quaker!
