about a week ago a pair of my gcc's hatched 3 of their 5 eggs! i have had a few peeks here and there over the last week but didnt notice anything out of order. this morning i had to change the nesting material and apon pulling the little bubs out to do this i noticed one has severely splayed legs! ohmy.gif i never noticed before because i guess they are always huddled together in the corners piled on top of each other or with mum sitting on them.

Ok so iv been breeding for about 10 years now and this is the first case iv come accross so im not sure what to do. iv read about putting them in a small round cup or bowl and hand feeding but does anyone know that this will work? its obvious im going to have to pull the poor little bub which is fine by me but i really want to fix his little legs!

if you can help id love to hear from you!

thanks guys

I have no experience with this, but I wish you the best of luck. Hopefully someone with experience will reply soon.

Our very first clutch of baby budgies had splayed legs, we did splints (with the help of a friend) but the legs never really went back to normal, I think it was too late.. but they lived happy lives with some modification to their cages smile.gif

I know Von (NCvon) had two baby Quakers with splayed legs and she was able to correct it I think smile.gif You can do a search and find all her threads with advice and I`m sure she wouldn`t mind if you Pmed her, but I think she used the facial sponges, medical tape and bowls to fix it, found on this site

Since the baby is so young I think there is a good chance of correcting the problem, but I guess it depends on how severe it is.. Good luck! smile.gif

I was going to say NCVon had pretty good success with her babies with splayed legs so you can PM her and I'm sre she'll help you out. Basically you splint their legs with band aides so they resemble hobbles on a horse. Von can tell you exactly what to do.

Yes, if you catch it young you can correct it. I started out using a makeup sponge but it irritated the babies legs. I found a site that shows how to use a bandaid and it worked great. Here is the link I used to figure out how to do the bandaid http://www.poultryhelp.com/spraddle.html I changed the bandaid every other day. Once I had the bandaid on I used a tea cup and put paper towels in the bottom then the baby and paper towels around the baby to keep him up right, but the legs straight down and hold them in place. Then I placed the cup in the brooder. It took about 2 weeks for it to work but by the end of the 2 weeks he was standing up straight and walking around great. I would take him out when I fed him or to cuddle for a few minutes then put him right back in the cup. If I can help in anyway let me know.

OK IV GOT SOME GOOD IDEAS. THANKS GUYS. I RANG THE VET AND I THINK ILL TAKE HIM TO THE VET THOUGH JUST TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE. I JUST WENT AND HAD A REAL GOOD LOOK AT HIM AND HIS LITTLE TOES SEEM VERY SMALL AND UNRESPONSIVE COMPARED TO HIS TWO OTHER SIBLINGS WHO WERE HATCHED TWO DAYS AFTER HIM. I FEAR HE MIGHT HAVE MORE GOING ON THEN JUST THE SPLAY LEGS sad.gif IM GOING TO DO EVERYTHING I CAN FOR HIM THO AND WE WILL SEE HOW WE GO. THE VET SAID BECAUSE HES SO YOUNG ITS PROBABLY BEST TO LEAVE HIM WITH THE PARENTS FOR ANOTHER WEEK BECAUSE ILL OBVIOUSLY HAVE TO BE HAND FEEDING HIM ONCE HE GOES TO THE VET. THE PARENTS ARE STILL DOING A GOOD JOB AND FEEDING HIM LIKE USUAL AND THE VET SAID ANOTHER WEEK WONT BE TOO LONG TO LEAVE HIM IN THERE. ILL KEEP YOU ALL POSTED ON HIS PROGRESS. THANKS HEAPS smile.gif
