Tweedledee

I had a call today about my missing cockatiel and when I went to the people's house the one they had was not mine and was in horrible condition. I considered taking it to get it healthy again while looking for it's owner because the guy said he hates the bird and then he said I could have it for $50!! I am thinking of calling him to try to convince him to let me take it for free. It is very sad... it is missing a lot of feathers right above his tail feathers on his back and the ones on his head look terrible... some are broken and just hanging there. They've had this bird for 2 weeks now so I don't think it should look this bad. It was so sweet how can someone that found a bird, that claims to hate it, keep it anyway? I feel so terrible for this little bird and my boyfriend does not think I should take it because it isn't mine, he doesn't trust the guy, and he loves the Quaker parrot we took in right now. Obviously I would keep the Quaker and Cockatiel separated and continue looking for both of their owners but he thinks it is a bad idea. Any suggestions?

Awwww, go get that poor baby! You can look for his owner if you think he has one somewhere, while you take good care of him. Your found Quaker won't mind, as long as you keep them apart and make sure to always greet and speak to the Quaker first, since he was there first. He might even enjoy the company. And we're still hoping you find YOUR cockatiel, too!

I too would vote taking him if you have the space and time for him. Anything is better than the conditions he's in. If the person who has him doesn't want to give him away and you don't have an extra cage maybe offer to give him a set amount for the cage if he'll just give you the bird for free. You'd think he'd want to get rid of it if he hates it so much. I feel sorry for the poor dear. And still hoping you find your cockatiel.

Only take him in if you can afford the vet bills. From the sounds of it, he may have some sort of health issue (Cockatiels aren't known for plucking). If you do take the bird in, you'll have to practice strict quarantine and make sure to take the bird to an avian vet to get him tested.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

I agree with Carrie~Anne....the fact that he's missing feathers around his preen gland isn't good, and the ratty-looking feathers could be due to lack of bathing, nutritional deficiency or some other problem. If you do adopt the bird, take it to the vet ASAP and practice strict quarantine procedures....washing your hands after handling the bird/cage/toys/feed dishes, change clothes even....just my two cents.

I agree with everyone! Take him in if you can provide good care without compromising your quaker's health. You can continue to put out 'found' ads as well. Good luck in finding your birdie as well!

I agree, make sure if you do take this bird in that you have the money to get a full bloodpanel done and a fecal. And quarentine for sure

If you're really up to it I would call and offer to take the bird w/o the cage and see if he'll give you the bird for free. That way he can still sell the cage and make some money. If not offer him $20 and stress that it will probably cost close to $200 for a full workup at the vet. Good luck with your decision. I dont know that i could leave the poor guy either
