Okay, some I'm not currently planning to move- but one day in the future I might end up moving from where I currently live. This move could require an extensive car trip- like several states.

How do you move a QP that far? Car rides stress them out. So what do you do? I would never sell Yoda, I love him. Can the vet give you something to calm the QP down? Do they get used to the car?

Has anyone moved and driven with their QP?

If the bird is getting too jittery, chamomile is a great all natural mild sedative. Ginger is also good to give the night before to prevent car sickness. You can either put a few drops of ginger extract in their water, or give them a slice of ginger. I have never moved with my fids, but they have been on 2 hour car rides to the vet. It does get better the more they are in the car. If it is a long trip, fresh fruit with high water content should be provided so the bird doesn't get dehydrated. I usually put apple slices in the cage when we go to the vets.

took MoJo with me on a vacation to my dads house, its was 8 hrs one way so 16 hrs in a car over the course of a weekend. he did just fine, chipped chattered and squaked the entire way, stopped a bit more often to offer him water and food but other wise easy peasy!

smile.gif My parents take there quaker on trips with them in their RV. They strap the cage down with the seat belt. He gets on his swing and swings all the way there and all the way back, doesn't bother him at all.

We had to drive two hours to bring Jade home from Donella's, and she was fine. She didn't like the carrier dry.gif , but she didn't mind the ride. And when I took Clyde for his last checkup (in that same carrier), he talked to me all the way there and back, so he doesn't mind car rides, either. Before any birds have to take more car rides, though, I'm going to get a carrier they can see out of.

We travel with birds all the time...They do just fine. The only problem we've had is one of the cockatoos would get car sick if she could see out the window... So we just kept her carrier lower and she was fine.

One of Andie's birds used to love riding and sticking his head out the sunroof when we'd stop someplace...LOL Some of the looks we got were hilarious... Don't worry, he didn't do it while we were driving. LOL

I've never moved with a bird but we did bring him home from two hours away. I got a carrier from petco and he really seems to have no problem with it. I added a better perch than the one it came with so he would have options. I also put spray millet in there for a snack, and like everyone else said you can put watery fruit to prevent dehydration. We take him on short trips with the carrier buckled up in the car so he gets used to it. This worked with my cats and I figured it would work for a bird too. We go to petco and let him pick out a toy or we take daddy a sonic drink at work some Mondays while I'm off work. He particularly likes getting out and riding on my shoulder. I just put a handd towel on my shoulder to catch any poopies.
When I first got my cats Bryan and I were dating and living in the same apartment complex, but not in the same building. So every night when I got ready to head over to his place for T.V. time, I didn't have cable, I would load them up in the carrier and take them to his place, where they got all kinds of attention and had a whole set up. Litter box, food bowls, toys and a bed. So they assocaited going in the car with good things, because EVERY day it led to wonderful and OCCASSIONALLY it led to the vet.
So in short, no matter how long you have to travel or what kind of carrier you use, work on helping your bird associate the carrier and car rides with good things. A lot less stressful than putting a ticked off animal in a car with you for a trip or a move.

This is the bird carrier I have. He can see out the sides and the top and you can attach small screw on perches and toys in the slots like you would the bars of a cage. It is plastic, so it COULD be chewed up, but if you put a few little toys to occupy their time in there it usually doesn't get chewed.

Marla and Sunny both travel well (maybe they didn't know they had a choice.) We take them both when we spend the night at the house we are working on which is about an hour away. I use their sleep cage for long trips so they can see what's going on and us. I use a small dog/cat carrier for short trips. Just be sure to always secure the doors so they don't get out when you open a car door!

I agree, Just help him to make the association that it is fun. The cage is their whole world nesides you, so as long as they are in it with you they do well. Just start off slow.

Go sit in the car and have fun. Then when he is comfy with that sit in the car and start it and turn it off after a min or two, but donot drive anywhere yet. Then proceed to going around the block, then the store and so on. But just never leave him alone in the car until he comfortable in it with you first.

Good luck.
