I read in lots of recipes that use corn muffin mix but will banana muffin mix be ok too? Thats all we have laying around the house right now and I wanted to throw in some chunks of pumkins so I was planning on makin some up tonight. Im assuming you would just prepare it like the box says just adding in any fruits/veggies?
Thanks

good grief-- i just got a suprise! My knee-jerk response to your question was no way. The theory being that cornbread (as long as you don't slather butter all over it) is a healthy base to add a bunch of healthy veggies for the fids. Sweet or breakfast muffin mix wouldn't be a bird-healthy alternative. Kind of like choosing between plain shredded wheat or frosted flakes, right?
BUT.... then I went to my cabinet and pulled out 1 box of Jiffy corn muffin mix and one pouch of Food Lion brand blueberry muffin mix. The corn muffin mix is higher in calories (+6%), total fat (+54%), sodium (+77%), carbs (0 in bb muffins), and total carbs (+5%). Corn muffin mix was also lower in all the listed vitamins & minerals by 28-68%!
Does this mean the blueberry muffins would be healther for the birds (and us) than the corn muffins?!

Cornbread is used most often because its cheap...and it is also a dryer consistancy.
I don't see why any muffin mix wouldn't work.. just don't add any extra sugar.

everything in moderation

although i think the idea behind birdie bread is to sneak in other things that are healthy for them, so maybe that balances it out. I wonder what the sugar comparison is? I think thats most important in the long run anyway
