Well, we definitely are getting our puppy. Thursday was the first anniversary of my grandpa's death, and earlier this week Zach and I agreed that if the puppies were born on Thursday, it's a sign from my grandpa that we should get the dog. Well, I got the email this morning. The puppies were born on Thursday night, six boys and one girl. So we're getting a little boy! smile.gif I'm so excited!! Gail said she'll send me pictures soon, and as soon as I get them you can bet your buns I'll be posting them here! smile.gif

I went to the store where Zach works today and bought some little dog toys, that was sooooo much fun!

Yayy! Thats very exciting! I cant wait for the pics! Have any ideas for names yet?

Hi Zach, we've gotten some ideas from the tread I posted here.....but we don't know what we're going to call him yet. smile.gif It will come in time, though! smile.gif

You might think about getting a baby blanket or a fuzzy throw and sleeping with it yourself the last few nights before your baby comes home, so it'll smell like you, and then the puppy can sleep with it and it'll comfort him. He'll be away from his siblings and mother for the first time and he'll be lonesome and scared.
Andie's Mom
Siobhan has a good idea there. But I'd do it a little bit different I'd take a blanket over to the breeder and let the puppies momma and siblings smell get on it and then have it to bring him home with...

Can't wait to see photo's Keeshound puppies are so darn cute!!!

Absolutly get a blanket with the momma dog's scent on it - that helps a lot. Our breeder actually included that as part of the "newborn" package - she also gave us a CD with weekly pictures so we could see the puppies changing as they grew. She included the entire litter since we didn't know which one we were getting until a couple of weeks before she came home.

Not sure when you will be actually bringing your baby home - my Luna was born Nov 6(she will be 2) and we brought her home the day after Christmas - but I woould plan on taking down the Christmas tree and decorations before he comes in the house. Those things are just too tempting to a puppy. Find out what food the breeder weans to and stock up on it - if you want to feed something different make sure to make the transition very slowly so you don't upset his little tummy.

Don't use socks or old slippers etc as toys - it confuses them when they can have this one but not that one. You can start basic training the day he comes home and puppy classes can start at about 4 months when he has all of his shots. After that they have more "advanced" obeidience classes that train more "adult" dog commands.

Remember that behaviors that are cute when they are a puppy are not as cute when they are full grown so don't encourage those things - like jumping for attention, begging for food etc.

Doing dog rescue the hardest thing I have had to do was break bad habits they pick up either from the home they were at before or what they learned at the shelter before I get them so try not to create those habits.

Don't take him to pet stores or dog parks until he has had all of his shots but do let him be around all kinds of people and of all ages so he is well socialized.

Have fun - puppies are the best!

Zach is going on Thursday to the Dept. of Licensing, so he can get his Enhanced Drivers License (instead of a passport, to cross the border into Canada)...I'm praying that everything will work out!
jaytee
Congrats on your new born!!! Sorry about Grandpa!!!! Almost sounds like he's giving his daughter(in-law), wichever, one last jab. Go Gramps!!! Both blanket ideas are great. Christmas tree, never woulda thought of that! You mentioned Canada, have you checked on requirements for crossing the border with a puppy??
msdani1981
Hi Jaytee, yeah...I checked on the border requirements a long time ago...if the puppy is under three months, you have to sign a paper saying that when the puppy is old enough you will get the rabies shot. Then, they do check with the health department! smile.gif Other than that, we don't have to do anything. Pretty darn easy. smile.gif
