Hi, I'm new here. I mostly joined to learn more about these awesome birds.

I was introduced to one at Petco yesterday, my plan was to go in and get a hamster, I'm not a 'quick' buyer of animals, since I usually look through breeders for whatever I want, but a hamster's a hamster right?

I happen to be over in the bird section, looking around like usual and I saw a Quaker Parakeet bobbing its head at me, bored out of its mind. So I talked briefly to the lady and she took it out. I instantly fell in love with the little bird, and I was quite sad to put it back in the small enclosure they had for it.

I ended up not buying a hamster or anything, and came home to research these interesting birds. I probably won't get one until I'm settled into a different household (in an apartment right now), but I look forward to learning about these birds.

So eventually I'll get a bird. I just want to read up on everyone's experiences with their pet, and get to know the diet/behavior very well before I even get one.

These little guys sure can steal your heart quickly! I have loved having my around he is so much fun! If you plan on getting one doing lots of research is a great way to start!
One word of advice even though those beautiful birds at the pet store make your heart ache (I know for sure!) they are very overpriced.

Welcome to the forum! That's great that you're doing your research and not jumping into it, birds are an incredible amount of work, but definitely worth it!

I noticed that the one at Petco was around 259.00, I was surprised at the price. I know they high-list their animal prices, but when it comes to hamster, rats, or gerbils it's fine. My boyfriend fell in love with the Quaker as well, and we were both a little depressed to leave empty handed.

My apartment is rather open, the only place the bird could live would be up in my bedroom, but that's the home to my flying squirrel. I don't want my dog to gain total access to the bird at first, too much stress, and I think my roommate (who lives with us) would kill me if I brought something feathery home.

I've already been reading into the behavior section. My bf eventually wants to get a Macaw, so I thought a smaller bird would be good to start out with as well.
