My little canary, Aunt Bird died last night. We knew that it was coming, she had been dropping to the floor of her cage and lying on her back off and on for a few weeks. So yesterday she was eating a piece of broccoli, fell again and didn't get up. Poor thing. There was obviously something wrong with her, at least she's not in pain anymore. Does anyone else have canaries? I thought their lifespan was 5-10 yrs, but she only turned 2 in December. My first canary also died right around the age of 2. So now my other canary Max is pretty lonely. I feel bad for him. sad.gif

Did you take her to the vet? I don't know anything about canaries (except Tweety). Please accept my condolences for your loss!

No, I didn't take her to the vet. I just assumed it was her time because it happened the same age as my first canary.

OH I am so sorry to here about your bird. sad.gif But that is not normal they can live 10-12 years, I also have a canary he is into his 12 year now, and he is starting to look old now after his last moult, what colour was his poop, did it have any grit to eat as the canarys/finches need grit to grind up the seeds in their stomach unlike parrots etc who have crops and do not, without that they can sucumb to constipation and stomach problems, a canary which spends time on the floor of the cage is also not normal unsure.gif Once again I am sorry for your loss. ohmy.gif

After the loss of 2 canaries prematurly, you might want to have a vet check for the remaining bird just in case there is an environmental problem. I wouldn't even want to venture a guess, but something is definately not right.

I was thinking the same thing. However I know that I'm doing everything that I possibly can around the house - no teflon, no candles, no strong cleaners etc. I honestly don't know if my canary would survive a trip to the vet. I have tried many times to handle them, they prefer to be left alone. The few times I have had them out, their hearts beat so fast I had to put them back in the cage. So what to do?

When I take my bird to the vet, take the whole cage, minus food/water and a thick blanket that covers the cage, they arn't so skitterish when covered. Also leave any droppings etc in the cage for the vet to see. Good luck, and all the best.
