12 Step Process for Bird Addicts

by Heike Ewing Ott

This post originally appeared on the Quaker Parakeets Mailing List. Today it is still guaranteed to tickle the funny bone of any true bird lover who reads it.

For those who are interested, here are the twelve steps for bird addicts:

1) Admitted that we are powerless over birds and don't care.

2) Came to believe that having birds be the most powerful thing in our lives is ok.

3) Made a decision to surrender our lives and our will to the care and keeping of birds.

4) Made a searching and fearless inventory of our cages and noted carefully where there is room for expansion.

5) Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to other human beings the exact nature of our overwhelming love for the birds.

6) Were entirely ready to have our birds remove all our defects of skin and character.

7) Humbly asked for the removal of more furniture to make room.

8) Made a list of all birds we had been wanting and became willing to find ways to get them all.

9) Made direct purchases whenever possible, except when to do so would financially injure ourselves or our family.

10) Continued to take inventory and when we had more space, promptly filled it.

11) Sought through practice and meditation to improve our conscious contact with our feathered friends, hoping mostly for knowledge of their will and the ability to meet their needs.

12) Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to potential bird addicts everywhere and to practice sound care principles with all of our pets.
